My Davinci Resolve (Windows10) loads in 30-40 seconds, including the project, but the tumbnails and viewer remain blank for aproximattely 5 minutes until they finally show up and I am able to start working.

I used the hardware monitor to find the bottleneck, but it only uses CPU/SSD/HD/Memory/GPU during the first 30-40sec. Then everything stays VIRTUALLY IDLE for the next 5 minutes, until it finally loads completely.

The diagnostics log is attached.

I can use other programs normally in this meantime. So it seems that this is Resolve is waiting for something, but I don't know what.

Similar thing happens when I switch from edit to color page. No thumbs/viewer for a few minutes until it finally loads completely, but all harware sits idle.

After it loads, it works reasonably well and I can play/skim ungraded 1080 footage smoothly. I only use proxy for 4k and I cache transitions/gradings to keep going.

My hardware and software versions:
PC Intel Core i7-4790 @4GHz, 16GB DDR3, MB Gigabyte H97N
GPU Radeon 5700XT 8GB / Driver 20.45.01.28 (just updated from previous version, same problem)
SSD 240GB EVO 850 internal Sata (OS/SW)
SSD 240GB SU750 Internal Sata (Cache files)
SSHD 2TB WD Internal Sata + HD 5TB SG External USB 3 x2 (Video Files)
Windows 10 Home / Comp 19041.685 (Late 2020)
Davinci Resolve v.17b6 Free (just uptaded from b5, same problem)

Having said that, please take a look at the FAQs to see what info is worth reporting alongside your bug report so we have context. At the minimum, apart from the log archive, the Resolve version (and Studio/Free), OS version, other software, USB peripherals, plugins, hardware summary and drivers are needed.

Same here with Studio Version. 16 and 17. The problem seems to be related with our AMD cards (I also have a 5700XT). I haven't heared of any solution

I found more or less the same using my new laptop, I7 1165G7, Iris Xe, 16GB. No problems using my desktop, which is roughly as powerfull. Although CPU and GPU usage is low, it take a while to load (approx 30-45 sec) the viewer and thumbnails. Iris Xe uses shared memory, GTX 1050 Ti in desktop has 4 GB dedicated memory

It is a pity to have this kind of problems having the Studio version installed on a PCIE4 SSD and the media in another NVME drive... According to the last comment (Xe), that points directly to a non-solved problem of the program itself.

Further investigation and experimentation revealed that the 'waiting' is possibly loading of certain functions in Resolve. They take a long time (>10sec).

Most clearly you can see this using the Stabiliser: the first time use, initially the progress bar stays on 0%, CPU runs at appr. 23% for some time (normal-high speed), GPU=0. Then the process starts, (progress bar moves), CPU to 30%, GPU to 50%. Stabilisation finishes as expected. Next stabilisations perfoms normally, without the initial 0% progress time.
Sometimes Inspector seems to have this behaviour, it does not respond for some time. It cannot reproduce this systematically.

As long as Resolve runs the normal behaviour is maintained, including changing projects. No waiting required.

Another, probably related problem is that Resolve quits sometimes without any signal. Can be seen when starting certain tasks, eg. Shotmatching.

Task manager nowhere shows high figures, memory has free space indicated, GPU memory only partly used. Fresh drivers, fresh W10, Resolve reinstalled, Windows setting checked.


Examing the log file this could be related to another tread: 'Random crashes and slow loading - Deprecated SyLibIO'. As mentioned, the problems are only with my laptop, not the desktop.

I have the same issues.
I tested with different drivers, Standard Drivers, Enterprise drivers

The issue is present in resolve 16 and 17b7, free and studio.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
RAM: 64 GB
Storage: NVMe SSD Drives

I just changed my 5700xt with a 3080 and the problem is solved...

Unfortunately that's not an option for me.

Sadly this is a general issue with AMD cards only ... i really hope that Black Magic Design will figure out the issue ...

I can confirm the issues stated above even on the new 6800XT.

1. Takes a lot to load thumbnails the first time, you cannot edit anything until it finishes loading them.

2. Stabilizer takes a while to start when you use it for the first time.

3. While editing video footage from Sony A7III 4K files, Resolve starts to glitch out when you start cutting.. work around would be to render optimized media and edit on those, for the first two issues i have not found any workaround.

Windows 10 latests updates in 2021 / Driver 21.1.1 , PC in the signature.

It seems that this is an old issue. I am really annoyed by the fact that you can find recommendations to buy this GPU for Resolve. I even checked out the Puget Systems benchmark on this board and it looked good. I really hope that Blackmagic is working on a fix soon.

Installed Resolve 17.1 : issue vanished on my laptop. Thank you, BMD
