Render issues

Hey guys,

I've been using Resolve for a few months now and keep running into the same issue when trying to render medium complexity projects. Every time I add a few animations, titles or fusion compositions to a video and try to render, the render time will just start going up and up forever. It never stops and I have to force shut down the program.

Resolve runs well while editing and I have a decent editing machine (i5 9600k, 32gb RAM, RTX 2060) so I don't think it could be that the pc can't handle the render.

I'm not editing movies/documentaries, just 3/15 minute YouTube videos with moving titles, images... Premiere could handle all this without any render issues.

What could be causing this? I love the program but honestly this is a deal breaker. Every time I edit mildly complex stuff I have to go back and re-edit everything using super simple stuff, which lowers the end result of my videos.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I don't think that's normal.

What's your source media and export format? What resolution is the timeline and export?

h.264, 1080p resolution for both timeline and export. It was just a 3 min video I was trying to render. After downgrading to 16 and a few more unsuccesful attempts I finally managed to get the render through, but it took me about 20 tries, 5 re-edits simplyfing the video and over half a day lost

If it's 4K/UHD with some serious effects, I can see the bottleneck. Isn't the 20260 limited to 6 GB VRAM?

Nope, 1080p 3 min video with 6 video tracks and 3 audio, quite simple stuff

Were that the issue, Uli, wouldn't you expect to get a Memory Full error?

I've never had any error come up. Just the time growing forever and if I cancel it freezes and I have to shut it down from the Task Manager. I've also monitored CPU/GPU usage & temperatures while this happens and everything looks normal.

I have seen all kinds of render problems when the GPU is not up to it.

@Oscar: if you try to render in HD, does it stall too?

HD as in 720p? I always work with 1080p. Anyways, I just purchased the Studio version, hopefully that will solve the issue :)

I have lesser hardware and even my UHD exports work fine, so I'm still thinking this isn't a hardware issue.

What Fusion effects are in use? Maybe you're using things I never do.

Quite possible. I'm using Fusion only as a standalone, much more reliable.

Just simple text/element animations. It's nothing that the program/pc shouldn't be able to handle imo. If I was doing super complex masking and VFX I would understand, but it's just making images appear in cool ways, transitions and such.

Hardware runs well with all other programs so it's just really strange that this happens so often in Resolve when the program runs well in every other aspect.

OK.

What camera is the media coming from?

A7II h.264 1080p @30fps. But this last time that it happened it was actually an OBS recording of a Podcast, with different elements included (overlay, a7 II camera, video call...)

Alright.

I recommend against using screen capture for editing. Hardware recorders are better for that.

Re-test a project using only the Sony media. Same issue?

Second that. Even if OBS is officially doing CFR these days, if there is any other load on the machine it will still deliver VFR.
That can cause all sorts of problems.
