What is the best way to do HDR from BRAW?

I just got a laptop which has an HDR 100% DCI-P3 display and I am wondering how I should go about doing HDR video from a Blackmagic Film source. I do get confused on the color manage page, as usually I just stick to Rec. 709 for most of my videos (gaming, BTS), but for a large project it would be interesting to try HDR. There seem to be so many to choose from as well as so many options that it makes my head spin! The one I know is HLG, which does have backwards compatibility with SDR and HDR10, which most TV's seem to have, but then there are options such as ST.2084 all with different nit values. There's also Dolby Vision, which I know I won't be using as I can't get a license since it wouldn't be worth it for the near $0 budget filmmaking that I am doing.
If anyone could point me to a tutorial or give me a quick rundown on what the best HDR settings to save for future use would be, that'd be great.
Also camera raw decoding options would be great to. I don't want to choose settings which would contradict each other, causing my image to look overbright, clipped, or underexposed.
Also a good way to do an SDR conversion would be great (unnecessary for HLG from what I understand).
Thanks for taking the time to read this and have a good day.

I’m currently shooting a lengthy, very detailed HDR workflow series to release on youtube, hopefully within the next few weeks. It’s based on FCP however the premise will all be the same, regardless of the editor you use.

Thank you so much! I love your work on the cameras I used to have (G9 and GH5), so this is gonna be great!

I use the following. (Ignore the settings you don't have. The grabs are from the 17 beta.)
For the SDR version, simply change the Output Device Transform in Color Management to
Rec.709 before export.

- RAW Gen 5_2.png (185.5 KiB) Viewed 1920 times

- HDR Export.png (43.98 KiB) Viewed 1923 times

This is not an HDR workflow. And HDR/SD grades are not interchangeable, with an ODT.
OP, start with the Resolve manual, which has an extended section on it. And maybe ask yourself if ou really need to work in HDR, and whether you have the means to do it. Not a casual undertaking.

Knowing that I don't work in broadcast or cinema, why not?

For my meager projects, I find it works well enough.

If you're just doing something for yourself (and not on an HDR monitor?), it's fine if you like the result. But it's not "HDR", as the term is understood.

I still have to ask, why not? I mean, it triggers HDR mode in the Home Theater. It offers better dynamic range and colors than it's Rec.709 equivalent.
What settings are you thinking need to be changed to qualify as "HDR"?

I’m also curious about the definition of hdr that doesn’t actually include valid hdr data.
Reasoning of ODT in ACES is exactly that, to apply all grading in a uniform scene-referred system, then transform it to an idealized high-..everything virtual display with RRT and then "downconvert" to actual physical display using ODT. It is all within the practical limitations ofcourse, because grade is subjective and surround changes, screen size and whatnot necessitate tweaks, but in general it works and it works the same in new DWG color system, with the exception of proprietary gamut used instead of AP1.

Can’t wait to see it.
