Can't get collaboration to work on DV 16

PostMon Dec 28, 2020 6:11 pm

My colleague and I need to work on a joint project this week and need to collaborate but can't get the system to work.

I've tried to 'resolve' this using info on the forum and manual but luck. I apologise in advance if this problem has been answered multiple times before!

-- I purchased DV Studio last week.
-- He and I work in different locations.
-- He runs Mac OS Mojave, I run Mac OS Catalina.
-- We both run DV Project Server.

I created a new database

I enabled sharing and enabled collaboration. I then created a key and sent it to my colleague.

He added the key to project manager and got an error message. , "Failed to connect to the database. Please check log for details."

I then created the log by clicking 'create diagnostics log on desktop.'

Did that.

Did't understand a thing.

I'm an old bloke with bad eyesight. I'm short on everything except enthusiasm to learn and create stuff.

Any tips on what to try next would be much appreciated.

Jack

PS neither of us have our firewall on

I've heard it said that Collaboration was designed for people working in the same building on the same network. It's not designed for use over the Internet.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Collaboration is not intended for internet based real-time project sharing. It’s intended for facilities that have a central server machine with shared storage on the LAN.

That said it actually is possible to use this feature over the internet, but it requires portforwarding to be configured properly on your router, or setting up a VPN that everyone connects to.

But even if you do manage to get this working, it’s not particularly recommended, due to the high latency and unpredictable reliability of the internet.

Thank you both.

Our ambition is not to do 'live' collaboration but more of an asynchronous 'relay-race'

That is, I do some work then hand off to him. He then opens the project and takes further before closing and handing over to me.

Is this feasible at least?

Thanks

The DB server needs low latency connection to the client, I.e. same facility.
Put the DB server with the main facility and export the project each day for the other site, place it on a shared storage where it can be imported.
Then u can import their project, update to the DB before your day.

Presumably this means exporting the media too as the media source will have a different path.

In the past we put the media on dropbox and then exported the project. But then we had the problem of the path to the media being different so the whole thing became a bit of pain.

Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated.
