Fairlight Console query

Hi guys, not having access to any fairlight console I wanted to ask a question for someone that does.

When working in trim mode with physical faders, does the fader move at allto the existing automating (as occurs in the software GUI, which is very frustrating with large moves to grab with a mouse!) or does it sit at 0 and await your input?

Thanks,
Matt

It is usual for motorized faders to follow the automation. They are touch sensitive, and when in trim or touch mode touching them gives you control to write updated automation. When you let go the writing stops and the fader will return to following the automation already written.

The Pro Tools handling seems most logical. Switch to trim node, and the faders remain static awaiting your trim updates. For example, if I have a fader automating at around -20db and I want to trim it down a further -4db, it is far more precise and controlled to have that fader reset to 0db and await my adjustments when in trim mode?

In Pro Tools the faders do not remain static but follow the automation and update when touched in Touch mode, exactly the same as Fairlight. If you just want to make a small adjustment you would do it with the automation keyframes in Fairlight and automation breakpoints in PT.

Fairlight Console query

Charles to clarify, I am talking about when set to TRIM mode for automation. I assure you they do. Both on GUI and console. Fader set to trim will stop movement, reset to 0 and await input for adjustment ...

On the Fairlight GUI when automation is set to trim, the faders continue to move. Is there another step requires to lock their movement so I can easily make for small adjustments ?

Just back in the studio and to clarify further...

The main reason why I believe this issue doesn't exist in Pro Tools is the Trim fader is a separate row of automation to the main volume fader. Therefor, when you enable Trim on a track, you are presented with a new automation free fader ready for adjustment, which can then coalesce into your main fader as needed.

Fairlight is literally applying the adjustments to the main fader in a single pass, which is why I am seeing the fader moving in the GUI and chasing it around. The workaround for that I just discovered is if mousing, grab the numerical readout on the track and make adjustments there. The numbers still move relative to the fader level but I don't need to go hunting to grab a fast moving fader.

This has however thrown up other issues which seems strange to me (now deleting all automation past the playhead), perhaps a bug in v17. I'll create a new thread....

Matt, as the Trim function is only functional in PT HD and Ultimate, which I don't have, it is something I have never used so accept your explanation.
In Fairlight, yes the fader moves in Trim mode.

The Fairlight Audio Editor provides a "Trim from 0" enable in the Setup megamode (Console Setup).

Perfect reynaud. I need to get my hands on one of these editors. It really sounds like it completes every thing I am missing !
