Why can't I purchase resolve?

PostTue Dec 29, 2020 4:20 pm

We already have one license for Resolve, but now another member of our team needs one. No problem, I'll just go online and purchase a second license. Oh, I can only buy from a reseller? Annoying but OK. Oh, they want to send a physical card with a code on it? Extra annoying because I need this now, but OK. Oh, it's backordered for 4-6 weeks everywhere? Huh?

Is there any way to buy another resolve license right now? 16, 17, doesn't matter.

Thanks.

Looks like it's more or less impossible to buy Resolve for now. EBay has activation cards, but you never know if they're legit. Probably need to give it a few months. I've complained about this situation no end, but it doesn't seem like BMD cares.

it is a strange business practice. would almost have to be the only NLE with 2 million+ users that you cant purchase online immediately.

does anyone have insight as to why they persist with the 2007 sales model?

I purchased Resolve four weeks ago, through a reseller.

Still didn't get my activation code.

They explained to me that this month they only received 20 something codes, and cant satisfy the great demand. They cant even tell me when I will get it.

It is insane.

I am a Resolve teacher, and hear constant complains from my students, about how difficult it is to buy it.

Lets hope this is improved soon.

Then you can just use this license in the second machine:

CoreMicro website wrote:Each activation license can operate on TWO computers at the same time. You can de-activate from the activated computer if you want to move the activated license to another computer.

In case this is a third computer, then you really need a new license.

These were the reasons I did this (get ready) "tutorial" on how to buy Resolve key online:

My experience wasn't good when I first tried to buy Resolve, as I needed to get the software online fast from some reliable store. But no authorized reseller seemed to sell the activation key outside US.

This was my reason to do the "tutorial".

BUT unfortunatelly, it won't work now, as it seems to be in backorder everywhere.

The same key that activates 16 also does it in 17, and in future releases.

I have to believe it's something to do with contractual agreements with resellers circa early 2000s. I mean, I simply can't fathom why BMD would voluntarily retain this outmoded model.

This thread is case in point: they have a customer who wants to give them money, but software you download from the Internet is "out of stock." It's bananas.

Our original license is a dongle, which worked great when we were all working in the office. We could move it from one computer to another based on who needed it. It was never a problem because we didn't use the software often. Now that we're all working from home, moving a dongle around isn't possible... thus the need for another license.

I really don't mind spending the money. The software is worth far more than they charge. We paid close to 8k for that first license (Fusion from back in the Eyeon days) plus yearly maintenance. Since BMD bought them out, I think we only ever paid for one upgrade.

Maybe they should offer temporary licenses with proof of purchase or something. The current situation is ridiculous.

If you happen to be on the Mac you could get the app store version, as long as the limitations of that version are not an issue for you.

Do you need the Studio version or can the second person use the Free version for now?

If you really need the Studio Version now, it might be a good excuse to buy another camera. I won't suggest that you could buy it and return it, but the camera will come with an activation card.

You also might be able to buy an activation from someone who has more licenses than needed due to having multiple cameras. Try posting to the "Off Topic" forum.

Those are good ideas. Thanks. Most of the work we do is at greater than 4k and requires an OpenCL plug, so unfortunately the studio version is a necessity.

I agree. Offering a Software for sale, but then refusing to supply it , makes no sense at all!!

I previously contributed to this thread:

which is on the same topic.

Basically, I have given nearly 300 Euros to a reputable Blackmagic reseller, but got nothing in return, and no promised delivery date!!

I wonder if this is a European problem only ??

Is anyone from Blackmagic monitoring these threads??

It might be exacerbated in Europe. The BMD office is in GB. Due to both COVID and Brexit things are chaotic.
COVID is making things late (3 months late for some Zoom hardware). Due to COVID, Christmas and Brexit the UK ports are in a complete shambels . So much so that the main Taiwanese container shipping company has diverted it's ships from Felixstow (GB) to Rotterdam (EU). This will mean that deliveries to BMD Europe will be somewhat delayed.
If BMD then have to ship them from Rotterdam EU to GB and back from GB to the EU....

I think the second problem is that BMD is shipping out what stock it gets pro-rata to it's distributors. The problem is the back-order list for the distributors might not mach that. I ordered from my favorite supplier http://www.proAV.co.uk ASAP after the announcement and was number 9 on the list. The main distributor probably had a far longer waiting list. So if Scan got 100 speed editors with a 500 back order list 400 are still waiting. If ProAv only got 25 that might have filled most or all of it's waiting list.

So a major EU based Distributor might be having to deal with a large back order list and only a few units arriving at a time and those units arriving slowly due to the mess on the GB-EU cross channel problems in addition to the COVID holdups.

I would expect that in the future BMD will open up an office in the EU for supplying Europe and ship direct to the EU not to GB first.

Of course it might have helped if BMD for warned their distributors and got some stock in place BEFORE the announcement to the world. Especially with the disruption a pandemic has caused to production and supply lines.

I think it's a general problem of limited supplies under Covid-19.
Being far closer to China and without much import taxes on computers, I can't even get a Mac M1 here, neither a delivery date.

What BM needs to think over is the physical delivery of the keys on a card, which seems to be tied to the number of Speed Editors they have. I assume many customers might be happy if they get the license right away and regard the availability of the Speed Editors as a kind of lottery. When you get one, you're lucky. BM always said it's a limited offer. So, if you end up with a Studio license and no Speed Editor and you seriously need one, just buy it later.

Nick: Thanks for the offer. I had already put an order in with a reseller by the time I saw your message.

Everyone else: I'm in the U.S., so it's not just a UK problem. I did manage to find a reseller that had it listed as in-stock and placed my order. However, after ordering, they contacted me to tell me it's backordered and they will ship in 1-2 weeks. That's less time than other places but WOW is this whole process annoying. That said, it's still less annoying than Adobe's subscription-only policy, so I'll choose to wait it out at this point.

I really wish someone from BM would chime in and at least tell us they are aware of the problem.

BTW I think "1-2 weeks" means "when we get them" and the 1-2 weeks is the longest option they have on their system. Hopefully I am wrong.

It is exactly as advertised, including USB-C to USB-C wire.

I ordered on November 27 2020 from Visuals.ch in Switzerland.

The use of the Dongle or the Activation Card is poor business practice. Where you purchase Resolve from should have an activation number available with your purchase. You can then use Resolve immediately.

It is how a lot of software is done these days. Makes like a lot faster and with no reliance on shipping. And save a lot of paper and card that is not needed and an SDHC card. I know India needs a physical delivery and Mumbai is the capital of the film world but for the rest we don't need it.

I don't think you will. When you buy, you'll have a choice between dongle and activation code. Whichever you choose, they will ship something to you. Either the dongle or a box with the activation code inside.

By the way, I did receive my 2nd license from the reseller. Since they couldn't just send me the activation code immediately, I opted for the dongle. Dongles are nice because you easily move them between workstations if you need to.

They make great cameras and other products. They have completely failed with having Resolve Studio available. Purchasing the Dongle or Activation Code is a nightmare. I called B&H Photo for the availability of the Dongle or Activation Code. It is not available and they are frustrated with Black Magic Design. I will continue using Adobe's Premiere and some of their other products. I would rather pay a monthly or yearly fee to have the programs readily available.

Also listening to their customers and fixing things. We have Resolve studio (and a Speed Editor) plus some other small, less expensive BMD items, however that experience has convinced us not to do any serious investment in BMD kit.

This is 'not normal'.
If I had to buy activation code and wait for it month to be shipped I would simply give up as well.
It's 21st century- activation code which needs to be shipped? No activation codes, so you wait in queue? Are those codes generated by Martians who are hard to contact to ?

Joke aside. We bought license in 2019. Not sure exactly how long it took, but it was max few days.
