DaVinci started becoming very slow after disk change

Hi all,

DaVinci was working just fine, in good performance, but after replacing my storage disk (Drive D:) to a bigger and faster one, none of the existing videos are playbacking more than 2 to 5 FPS. Seems if I create a fresh new one with fresh new elements, it's working fine, but the existing ones are impossible to use.

I thought it was cache, then I deleted all of them and asked DaVinci to recreate optimized media for all elements in my video, but still the playback is slow. Proxy makes no difference, as well those traditional 5-steps configuration to improve the video playback.

I got a i7 7th generation + 16gb DDR4 + 256Gb SSD OS + GeForce 1070 6Gb. this system is more than enough to run anything I need.

Another important observation is that the previous D: storage was running in NTFS and the new one is running in exFAT. It is relevant?

My guess is exFat is the issue

I had this as well recently, I installed the old drive and did a windows repair (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ted-system) and then I cloned the disk again. Now it works like a charm.

I would advise reformatting D to NTFS. (Back things up first.)

In parallel now I installed DaVinci 17 in a tentative to fix the problem, but as I'm relatively new to this tool (6 months of use only) , I didn't know that I had to backup my library. Now I'm stuck in the 17 version as the library became incompatible yo the 16 version. Is there a way to work it around and have 16 understanding the library?

Other update on my case is that I tried to create a new project from zero and as I was adding more elementos to it, DaVinci became slower and slower. Looks like DaVinci now is going to be slow regardless of what I do.

Ill try installing back the old drive and see what happens. Will update you guys here my findings.

Updates: I got the old Drive D and connected it thru an USB port, then I went to DaVinci on any of the projects who were very slow and pointed the cache to the new Drive E (former drive D, now as an external drive), and guess what? just like magic, DaVinci started working normally, navigating naturally and playback was back smooth. I don't think the issue was cache because the new drive also got an exact copy of same cache. The issue seems to be exFAT.

Once I get a chance to clean Drive D and format it as NTFS I`ll come back here and post the updates.

The database is not backwards compatible. (That's why backups are so important.)

Updates: I managed to change the Drive D: to NTFS and copied the entire cache from Drive E: to it, restarted the computer and tried to open DaVinci, my expectation was that it would open normally, still pointing to Drive E: where the old cache is and then I would switch the cache to Drive D: and it would continue working as smooth as before, however DaVinci now is constantly crashing on startup. I tried to start it more than 20x already and still crashing.

On previous experience when DaVinci was crashing on startup, I only needed to keep trying and on the 5th or 6th try it would open.

Is there a way to debug DaVinci's startup and findout why it's crashing?

Final Update: After trying to start it for 30x, the 31th try DaVinci opened and as expected, it was working real quick, very smoothly. Then I updated the cache library to D:, it popped up some warnings and thought a little, but after few moments it finished whatever it was doing and it was working just like charm.

The Root Cause: exFAT definitively is not the best filesystem for DaVinci and if you are using Windows, better stick to NTFS.
