Is it Keyboard Editor - OR - Speed Editor

So I've purchased Resolve Studio 17 which comes with the Speed Editor and am patiently waiting for it to ship. Meanwhile, I'm curious, does the Speed Editor effectively replace the Keyboard Editor, or is there a plausible use-case for having both?

Or is the idea to use a Speed Editor as an adjunct to a conventional keyboard, e.g instead of having both Speed Editor and Keyboard Editor?

Curious because I'm right handed and use a trackball (on the right side of the keyboard) instead of a mouse. Honestly, what held me off on purchasing the Keyboard Editor was the knob being on the right instead of on the left, which for me would have complicated my life a bit because while the computer is principally dedicated to Resolve Studio, it doesn't mean it won't see use with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well, occasionally. That, and I'm not sure how it would feel to have the Keyboard Editor in the keyboard drawer and the trackball further to the right. That might have been OK, dunno.

Note; had the knob been on the left, purchasing the Keyboard Editor would have been a no-brainer. Unfortunately, I'm not in the mind of the product designer for either product and don't know what they had in mind for using using these two, e.g. independently or whether they complement. The point is, if they work together seamlessly I'll probably give it a whirl and purchase the Keyboard Editor, regardless.

Anyway, it looks like most things are common between the Keyboard Editor and the upcoming Speed Editor - but - if anybody is willing to share a bit of insight, they will find a receptive audience in me!

I don't own either, but I've read that the Speed Editor is a newer, striped down version of the Keyboard Editor (at a far more reasonable price), with some tweaks/improvements.

I believe one would expect to see a Keyboard Editor, or a Speed Editor and normal keyboard, but not all three.

Ok. I had the Editor keyboard for three months on a documentary project. In the end, I unplugged it and put it in an drawer. It does only some of what the Speed Editor does. None of the Multicam functions. It’s HUGE. Unless your a touch typist, forget it altogether, as it’s not backlit, and the letter labels are so tiny I found it almost impossible to use for regular typing. It’s just as hard to use the keyboard shortcuts it offers (which it’s illogical to re-assign in software), as it is to simply learn the ones that currently exist.

So, no, I wouldn’t recommend the keyboard to anyone. I would recommend the Speed Editor to everyone. It adds functionality and speed and convenience at an affordable price and small footprint.

Then add a programmable Elgato Streamdeck for everything else

My 2¢

Sure.

Here’s the link for the StreamDeck XL.
They do a great job of explaining it, and of course it’s usefulness extends to any app you use. I use it a LOT for After Effects.

Then sideshowfx.com do GREAT sets of icon/shortcut combo collections for different applications, including Resolve. I can’t imagine editing without them now.
For me, setting up an 8-node “blank” Color template, with labels, just how I like to start a grade, is one tap.

This is my setup:

Hope that helps.

Before I forget, one of the most valuable uses of Streamdeck is for key wording. Here was my last setup for the documentary. One tap sets a marker, opens its dialog, inserts the keyword and returns to the timeline.

And preset node tree configurations. One tap.

Hi Trevor,
Yes, thank you. No time to delve in depth, so I may shoot you further queries later if you don't mind.

Me? Switching over from Vegas to Resolve Studio (after 20 years on the former). Plenty experienced in production per se, but regarding Resolve? Utter virgin! Presently frustrated with obtaining a high performance AMD CPU, and still don't have Resolve 17 and the Speed Editor until they ship - but B&H already have my money for it ;>)

meanwhile, I find it quite interesting how the chip suppliers are creating demand artificially and raising prices. Marketing dissertation in the future for someone, I'm sure. Anyway, I'm being dragged away from the computer by significant other . . . happy new year, pal.

I've had the Speed Editor for a few days and been using it to edit projects. It does not replace Editor Keyboard as it only has a subset of its function. It's meant to be paired with your own keyboard for full functionality. I personally use Apple's magic keyboard. I place Speed Editor above the magic keyboard, and my right hand would jump between the dial and my mouse depending on what I'm doing.

I've only been using Resolve since March last year and this is the first thread I have come across suggesting mechanical add ons like Stream Deck.

I probably have the record number of posts from Jim Simon telling me to read the manual and follow the lessons. (Happy New Year Jim - you are a driving force around here. Annoying at times but then some of my best teachers at school were like that!)

I do the lessons and read the text but I guess one of my blind spots is an ability to learn the hot keys. When I want to do something I grope around the screen until I find a likely icon. I bought an Editor Keys Keyboard but I find the writing on it too small and keep putting it back on the shelf.

I have some spare Android tablets and am tempted to try the SideShow system and putting a few pages of icons on one to see if it speeds me up.

Googling around I found some other bits of kit and I also saw a YouTube demo using three wheels. Does anyone know what these are and use them to advantage?

What appeals immediately about the SideShow system is that one does not need to spend money on new hardware as long as one has a spare tablet or two. But I am happy to buy kit if it speeds me up and that is why I am buying the non-freebie version of Resolve with a Speed Editor chucked in for the money.

All ideas welcome.

And a Happy New Year to everyone (Jim gets his twice!)

Tony
