Need Help with performance confused!

PostThu Dec 31, 2020 9:39 pm

Hi, i need some help with performance.

my pc is specd as follows
i7 8700
16gb ram
gtx 1080
hard drive F: (source footage)
hard drive D: (Scratch)
nvm (OS)

I have a clip that is 1080p with some basic correction and sharpening. which you can see here

i have set the option to use optimized media when available (set as DNxHR SQ)
set the option to render cache as smart
set the option of color grade render of this clip as well in color page

this specific section in edit page (with cache blue bar) plays real time and plays at 10 fps in color page.
you can see the hard drive and gpu usage here

neither the GPU nor the hard drive seems to be bottle necking this clip. And surprisingly it plays realtime in edit page. In color page, If i disable all nodes, still it doesnt play realtime, when i bypass it does play realtime.

also, in contrast a clip with noise reduction, grain and some more effects runs real time in both edit and color page after the cache render.

i am confused and not sure why this is happening so. Am i missing something?

also the option of use 'optimized media when available' is only applicable when i generate optimized media from the media section? or does resolve automatically generates optizimed media when it gets time and resource? is there a setting how and when it generates?

i apologise if this has been asked before, i couldnt find after a lot of searching

Sometimes the GUI slows down when certain tools are visible/enabled. Does it improve if you set the current tool to Off?

Also, which format are you caching to? It's separate from the Optimized media format (Project Settings > Master Settings). Caching to a single HDD might give you issues, even if the Task Manager doesn't directly indicate that the hard drive isn't keeping up. But of course there shouldn't be a difference between the Edit and Color pages.

I've tried switching to off. Tried switching off scopes. Almost everything I could turn off. But didn't help.

Surprisingly, when I restart davinci this seems to be happening in another section of the timeline while this is now playing realtime in both edit and color pages. Lol

This is just a 1080p clip with minor adjustments!

In another timeline I have a 6k footage with 6k timeline. Noise reduction, film grain and heavy mask tracking. That seems to be playing realtime after cache render. I am so confused!

Dont know if that helps, but I had strange performance troubles I could not understand. I found another topic here with a solution that helped me.

Try following:
1. Load newest Nvidia STUDIO Driver (at the moment 460.89)
2. Go to Resolve - Preferences - Memory and GPU
3. Select GPU processing mode CUDA
4. GPU selection mode - Manual
5. Uncheck use GPU Scopes
6. Restart Resolve

Hope that helps

I would start over. Don't optimize the media and turn smart cache off.

Can you play the ungraded footage in real time? If so, what adjustments can you make and still play real-time?

If real-time is impossible from the outset (what codec? resolution? fps?), than go ahead and optimize the media. Can you play it now? What happens when you add adjustments? What happens when you selectively cache clips ("user", not "smart") either on the Edit timeline or on the color nodes?

And so on, one step at a time.... As noted above, de-selecting "use GPU scopes" does help on some systems, but not all.

That was a good advice.

I changed from game to studio drivers and that alone has seemed to fix it for now. Also seems to be running much snappier and fluid in other places. Wow! Didn't think studio drivers do so much.

But I'll keep the other suggestions just in case it starts behaving like that again.

Thanks a lot guys! You all are the best!
