Hi, Quick Yes or No Question

PostSun Jan 03, 2021 5:13 pm

I very recently decided that it is time to learn how to use a video editor, and after much websearching decided on Davinci Resolve. When I installed it, it was v16, and now v17 is up.

Q: The current video tutorials I've thus far found have been (understandably) for v16. If you were brand new, would you stay on v16 to learn with tutorials from the same version? Or would you get the newest v17 version? So, in short: v16 right now to learn? Or v17?

Thanks for any advice on this.

I recommend installed 17 and going through the training manuals offered at the following link. (Below the videos.)

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

This is how I will approach it then. Thanks!

I would use Resolve 16 and wait until Resolve 17 is out of beta testing.

On a Mac, you can dare to go 17. On a PC, I'd wait.

For important work, that's good advice. If one is just learning, go for 17. When it comes out of Beta, you'll be all set to switch production over.

Thanks for the responses. I'm sticking with v16 for now, just until I get basic literacy. This is an amazing program to be sure...

...On the audio side of things (which I do have some experience with) Fairlight is in many ways a top-flight audio editor from what I can tell so far. To include it in a free package is rather astonishing.
