Davinci won't play certain videos in my new computer...

PostMon Jan 04, 2021 4:38 am

Hi...
I have a few questions.... first... how do I find my project files? I am trying to work in a new desktop on a project that I've been working on in my laptop for the past few months. I got this desktop because it can handle all the post production work I need to do now. I can't figure out where my project files are, as crazy as that sounds. Sorry for my ignorance... Can anyone help me with that?

Also.... I plugged my external thunderbolt drive into the new machine, and Davinci is giving me the "media offline" message for some of my files. Actually most of them.... I think it may be a codec issue, because Windows is doing the same thing, it won't play all my files when i double click on them, (I can hear the audio, though) and it's telling me I need to buy a codec extension. Is that right? Why wasn't that the case in my laptop? I'm confused. My laptop supports all the files. 264, 265, anything..... all good, but in this new machine, I can't play them, in or out of Davinci.

Sorry if these are simple issues, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Happy new year to all.
Peace and respect
Rock

For the media offline, Assuming you were also working off of the external drive with the laptop, is it being assigned the same drive letter on the desktop? The path has to be exactly the same or you need to re-link.

For the other issues, you really need to provide a lot more detail. What are the specs of each computer, including operating system version (example, not just Windows 10, but the full version number), the CPU, RAM, the GPU model and driver version, etc. Video file types are frequently containers that can have a variety of codecs. Download the free MediaInfo program and report back what codec is being used for those problematic files.

Ah... I noticed the drive was assigned a different letter, but I don't think that's the problem because Davinci is seeing other files and all my folders. it's seeing H264 files, but not H265, (I have both in my project) and so I'm not sure if it's Davinci with the problem, because it's also happening in Windows when I just double click on those same files. Same result.

My original laptop, where I began this project, and where everything is fine and seen perfectly, is a Dell XPS 13 2 in 1, 7390, an i7, 16gig RAM, internal iris graphics,

and the new desktop machine is also i7 (both 10th gen, by the way), 32 gig RAM, and I'm using an RX580 graphics card.

I have a second laptop as well, and just to test it, this laptop is seeing all files well, too.

Windows 10 HOME in both of my laptops, one of them is build 18363.1082, and the other is build 19041.685, and the new desktop is Windows PRO, (maybe that's the issue?) build 19041.685, so the same build number of one of my laptops.

The specs of the second laptop I'm referring to... Celeron N400, and 4 gig RAM, this laptop is just used to carry around for me to do my writing, but amazingly, it plays all the files flawlessly.

Whew! Thanks a lot!!

The Beginner's Guide will. Make that your next, immediate goal. (It's well worth the time. ;) )

Read it from beginning to end, Jim Simon... there's nothing in there telling me why Windows won't play certain files on one machine, and not on another machine. Thanks for the input.

That answer was more in reference to the Project File question.
