So frustrated With Davinci Resolve

PostMon Jan 04, 2021 8:40 pm

Since buying Black magic 6k over a month ago I have not been able to edit on Davinci Resolve. I keep getting an error message that GPU Memory is full but I can edit the same clips on Adobe with ease. I tried both version 16 and 17 beta same issue.

My PC has AMD 7 3700 with RTX 2070 6GB and 64GB of memory. I just built this PC thinking I have a good editing PC. Not sure why I can't edit anything on resolve without getting the error message.

I did a google search and I tried all the suggestions but nothing worked. Even when I reduce the frame size on the timeline I still get the error. About to ship the whole think back and just stick with Adobe Premiere.

It’s likely a config issue as that a common config. please see the FAQs as to how to generate logs and post a link to those and a nfo, and then also confirm which exact version of Resolve u have. An engineer can take a look.

Resolve uses the GPU for image processing so it’s likely GPU driver, but please also lust ur timeline res and frame rate ur trying to work in.

I was told to make sure that I wasn't using the latest Studio driver for my GPU. We do not support the Nvidia Gaming driver. I send logs to the support team. Shouldn't the logs tell them if I was using the gaming driver or not?

I'm thinking this is a bug in Resolve with nVidia cards that BMD needs to handle. Here why.

Even folks with 11GB of VRAM get the issue.
Folks have reported testing the exact same project on an AMD card with less VRAM - and it works!

I can confirm this, a student who had the problem with a PC and his Nvidia 11 GB card gave me his project to check, and I had no problem on my Mac with only 8 GB VRAM. There seems to be a driver problem.

We've had a couple dozen drivers since the problem showed up.

But whether driver bug or Resolve bug, I do think BMD needs to step up and handle this fully.

Absolutely, and I can understand the frustration.

It got resolved after installing the studio driver. I am now a happy camper I just wish we can shot raw in 4k. That would be my only complaint right now.

6k seems to bug the system down using Resolve but on Adobe it handles it with ease. I understand Davinci Resolve utilizes the GPU more while Adobe depends on the CPU. I built my system with Adobe in mind. The idea of spending over a thousand on GPU is ridiculous and you still get bogged down.

Well, 6 GB VRAM for 4K output is very tight and BM clearly says so.

I'm struggling trying to render and cacheing a sequence with various Fusion Clips. I've tried installing the Nvidia Studio Drivers and it's still not working. Do you have another workaround? i7-8550, GTX 1550 ti, 16 GB ram, Windows 10.

Davinci requires more resources than Premiere, this is in the manual and the recommended hardware requirements.

Unfortunately, that is not a universally workable solution.

AMD 9 3900x, RTX 2070 supper 6GB, 64GB of memory, four 2TB of PCIe gen4 NVMe hard drives plus another three 4TB of the regular hard drive.

If the above setup is not good enough then I don't know what else to say. Just a little disappointed because I am beginning to like using Resolve. I paid for the studio version but found myself going back to Adobe due to the weak performance of Davinci Resolve.

It's a very good solution. For HD.
Now you can think about either paying up through the nose for Premiere or save that money and get a better GPU for UHD/4K.

6GB VRAM is really cutting it close, I had issues with 11GB when editing 4K footage sometimes with certain effects.

Just a footnote for those struggling with GPU full and other problems...

I'm regularly editing H265 4K 50/60FPS footage (with color grading, stabilization and temporal noise reduction) and delivering via H265/HVENC with my system and enjoy excellent performance and reliability.

The secret?

Well I'm still using Resolve 15.3 (studio) because it does *everything* I need and is rock-solid.

If folk are having problems, consider going back a few versions - in most cases you'll lose nothing but a bit of fluffery that may not be important. I don't need object removal, a "boring detector" or other features that were added from version 16 onwards and I value the performance/stability of version 15 too much to bother with upgrading.

Bottom line: if it works, don't fix it! :-D

I have dealt with the same issue, Everytime i try to edit a Video i either get the gpu error or the timeline just turns to blue and it won't play anything been like this for weeks on both 16 and 17 and yeah i agree that it is a problem with NVidia

OK, so where do we get this from now ? You can only download v16 and v17 both of which seems to run "like a dead dog" compared to the older versions.

A real shame as it was brilliant and now unusable (yes on latest card drivers)

Do you know if version 15.3 supports Raw editing since I only shoot Raw with my Cinema 6K? For now, I do all my editing with Adobe for my 6K videos and HD with Resolve. Once you show Raw it is so hard to go back. Same as in Photography.

I'm very new to Davinci Resolve and at this rate, I will never learn how to use it. Tired of paying monthly fees to Adobe.

Sorry, it's not good enough for what you're trying to do. You are bottlenecking your system severely with that graphics card, and the BRAW + Resolve workflow is designed to be heavily GPU accelerated. You may have better results if you change your settings to disable GPU acceleration for BRAW, as a 3900X should manage about 60 fps for 6K.

I didn't know about such an option to disable GPU for BRAW. I will give that a try. Thanks
