Corrupted .MOV files in windows but not in MAC

PostTue Jan 05, 2021 3:35 am

Hi guys! I really need some help.. I started a project in my old Macbook pro, footage from BMP4k (braw) and S1h Lumix (.mov)
Now I have a new pc, i9 10900k, 128 GB ram, gtx 3070, .. etc
I copy the project to the pc and many of the Lumix footage is corrupted! the same file from the same external drive in mac looks fine!.
all the corrupted files have weird rainbow bands on top of the footage..
Any idea how to fix this?
btw. the project works smoothly in my old mac than in the new pc/

Can you share a problem clip?

Sure I can!
https://ibb.co/sPhxXWq
https://ibb.co/R9m4J8F

It's the same clip, in Mac and in Windows..
Some clips in Windows are fine, others not! and all clips are from the same camera, same codec, same everything... Some clips are fine at the beginning and after a few frames those weird color bars show up..
Until now the only solution I found is .. on my MacBook pro, convert all the MOV (h26) into ProRes 422 HQ.. with those files I can work in Windows without any problem..

ah and just be clear.. I tried different ways to transfer the file from mac to pc.. It's always the same problem!

Free or Studio? The free version on the Mac supports some codecs that only Studio can handle under Windows.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Studio 19.1.3
MacOS 13.7.4, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580 + eGPU
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, MacOS 14.7.2

I couldn't find any way to download the clip for testing.

It's the free version.. but not all the files have the same problem.. some video from the same camera with the same settings are fine!

That's HEVC in 5K resolution and the somewhat uncommon combination of only 420 chroma subsampling, but in 10 bit.
It imports and shows on the Mac. I'd say you are running into a limitation in the free version under Windows. Check all the details with MediaInfo to find out how the clips differ.

Hi, i'm new n this forum and using BMPCC last couple of years. For Corrupted .mov files in windows becuase windows not supported many files which one copied from Mac because the file format is different. i think if you want to repair the corrupted .mov files use a video repair software such as Stellar Repair for Video, Grau, etc As I found on search may be these tool will help you. Thanks!

Vielen Dank Uli! I didn't know about this codec and the limitation of the free version in Windows!

This means, to use these files in Windows I need to have the studio version. I just don't understand why this problem doesn't happen in the free version on Mac?

Could also be an issue with your Graphics card driver, try updating that to the latest version if you haven't done so already

yes, you need the studio version for windows

and also, the windows free version has more limitations than the free mac version

On the Mac, you have already paid for some codecs to Apple ;-)

BTW, the new Mac M1 machines are the only ones to decode the most recent HEVC flavors in hardware.

I already did! the computer is fully updated but still don't read those files..

Make, sense, that's why the apple computer is ready to go :P
The M1 sounds nice, but mac mini is too small for me, I'm more into vfx, Images sequences are fine for me :)

Why? It would be cheaper to buy Studio. Your GPU will not work in a Hackintosh, BTW.

Well, a Radeon 580 should give you decent possibilities in a Hackintosh. Or have a look at a Mac mini M1.

But please understand that a current Mac mini is not a complete solution if you need serious graphics power.
