eGPU advice

PostTue Jan 05, 2021 10:57 am

Anyone use the eGPU unit? I am working on a Mac Pro 2013 and it does get rather bogged down when Resolve is exporting hefty files. I have wondered about getting an eGPU breakout box to help things along. My Mac Pro has Thunderbolt 2 ports and I know that the eGPU has Thunderbolt 3 but I am assuming that I can use it through an adapter, although then only accessing Thunderbolt 2 speeds. I do also have a 2017 MacBook Pro with TB3 ports so I guess I could do some of my bigger renders on that and access TB3 speeds.

I also seee that the 'eGPU Pro' unit has been discontinued so the eGPU is the only unit right now.

Any advice gratefully received

Thanks

Thank you Fabio. What is a Purge Wrangler? I see that the doc says 'Disconnect all Thunderbolt peripherals from your Mac'. I have two RAIDs connected via Thunderbolt, as well as a 4K monitor. Is this going to be an issue? Where will the eGPU be in the chain?

Just for install the “driver” you must disconnect all thunderbolt device. After configuration you can use all.

Purge Wrangler is the utility for “force” the use of thunderbolt 3 e-gpu to unsupported Mac.

See the guide it is very simply.

What's a 'whiteout problem'? or is that a typo for 'without'?

So when I use Purge Wrangler I will no longer be able to use the Thunderbolt 2 ports of my Mac Pro, other than for a monitor? My RAIDs are connected via those ports so this would cause problems. I guess I could connect the RAIDs via the spare TB3 port on the eGPU?

Ahaha...sorry I’m italian...the corrector sometime write other. Is without problems.

No no...you can use all port on your MacPro.

I have all thunderbolt2 and 3 (whit adapter) connect directly to my Mac Pro.
Only during the install of PurgeWrangler you must disconnect all devices.
Only the monitor can remain connected.

No problems - that all now makes sense. Thanks so much for your help.
