how to select a part of the video

PostTue Jan 12, 2021 2:39 pm

Hi! I´m a total newby in DaVinci Resolve. Worked a lot with MagixVideoDeluxe Products, but this is different.
My actual problem is, that I can´t find the possibility to make a selection of a clip. Don´t know the absolute right word in english (I´m german) so I will explain. If you have a landscape on your video with a lot of mountains but just want to show only one mountain which is i.e. at the left side of the video. How to select only this mountain. And I don´t mean the cropping-function. After I selected the one mountain I would like to have that these part of my video should fill the screen totally.
Thanks vor help!

With the clip selected in either the Source window or in the Timeline, open the Inspector, and under Transform use the Zoom controls to enlarge and the Position controls to place it where you want it. Do be aware that zooming in will decrease the resolution of the image. Not so bad with 4k footage up to a point, but with HD you will notice it.

The biggest mistake I made after switching from Premiere Pro was thinking that my previous experience meant I could just jump into a new NLE without difficulty.

Nope.

As a new user, your first course of action should be to complete some Resolve training. The Beginner's Guide and Advanced Editing are an excellent groundwork to get you moving smoothly. ;)

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi! Thank you for the advices! I will try the zoom and position function. And yes, I have also the feeling that I have to change the kind of working with this new tool. I already saw some beginners guides and will have a look at the suggested videos. think, there is still some work ahead of me.
thanks.

Hi! I´m back after some pause and it seems, the question is not totally solved...
Worked now with that zoom function. but it is really not what I need. I had the picture I needed, but then I wanted to let the picture shrink and vanish while the background gets larger and becomes the foreground. If i only had the part of the video I needed (a selection) and nothing else it would be good. But when I made the zoomed part smaller, the total part with everything I didn´t wanted was visible.
have a look at the attachment.
