Is Anybody Using A LG OLED As A Monitor Through Decklink?

I'm hoping to change my workflow this year to add 10-bit HDR.
My system is a AMD Threadripper 3960, Nvidia 3090 graphic card, 4K Decklink 12g Extreme, ect.- the last two components were just added this week. I will be capturing video content with a Sony A7SIII.

I'm presently using a two monitor system, but neither are 10-bit capable. So, I would like to be able to retain one of the for controls, and use a LG CX OLED as the full screen viewer. I haven't bought the TV yet, as I want to be sure that this combination will be compatible for working with HDR in a 10-bit color space. Also, I REALIZE THAT FOR CRITICAL HDR COLOR GRADING, that this TV won't meet the highest certified standards, and that's OK.

So, can anyone offer any incites as to whether this combination will work? I saw an earlier thread where the OP was having problems getting the TV to go into HDR mode with Resolve. I don't know if he ever solved the problem or not.
Any help would be appreciated, as I now need a monitor of some sort for this workflow.

Most definitely possible. You just have to use HDMI from your DeckLink. Converters Don't carry the HDR metadata over. So no SDI to HDMI. But DeckLink to hdmi to the LG you can get HDR 10 bit.

So, I can probably offer a little bit of insight. I have a 48" CX as my main monitor (not decklink). The HDR capabilites are pretty weak. Peak NIT brightness is low. It's a gorgeous picture for SDR however.

Right now I have a Decklink setup with a Hollyland Mars 400s streaming to my iPhone 12 Pro Max. HDR seems to be much more accurate with the 1000 NITs OLED screen on the iPhone. Downside of course is that it's such a small monitor.

Thanks for your feedback. I skimmed that YouTube video, but still have some questions. Was this guy in the video using Resolve?

One thing which caused me concerns is this recent thread, where the OP wasn't able to get the LG to register the HDR Flags from Resolve 16 or 17 coming from the Decklink. It sounded like it may have been a Resolve issue. The thread kind of died with the OP never coming back and saying he'd solved the problem. Here's a link to the thread. He is using colorlab ai to sending out the HDR signal. However Resolve does this to. I got my C9 working fine in HDR/ resolve with a DeckLink mini monitor 4k

With a Decklink Extreme 12k connected to a CX via HDMI, it'll pop into HDR mode if you set the right output color space in Resolve and check the "send metadata via HDMI" box.

You'll need to buy a LG Service Remote Control in order to access the hidden menus that allow you to unleash the full HDR dynamic of the TV. Because LG limits the peak brightness to preserve the Oled screen life time.

Just wondering if you have used an LG OLED as a monitor and have seen how significant the brightness reduction is in PC mode. I have also seen some references in posts from people who say that you can also get around this by not choosing PC for the HDMI input you are connected to. Any information on this from anyone who has actually tried it?

Not necessarily true that it won't work with a converter. Some converters (like the AJA hi-5) will allow you to set output colorspace, which will kick the TV into HDR.

Also, this is a much more complete/accurate walk-through of calibrating the CX:

LG CX series has about peak brightness of around 800 nits, typically 500-600 nits. If you are going to master, your HDR display settings must be set to 600 nits. You will not be able to do 1000 nits - the current standard for broadcast and streaming deliverables. That said, the monitor is fine. Calibrated, it works great for SDR mastering and tone mapped 600 nits HDR.

Just be careful, HDR ages OELD displays faster in our experience. Burn-ins and color shifts at a much faster rate compared with displaying SDR images.

Since I first started this thread, I've installed a Decklink 4K 12g Extreme, and purchased a Dell UP3221Q monitor- which will do 1000 nits. I'm still probably going to add a 55" LG CX which will be used for final proofing and viewing on a larger real world display device. But it won't be run for hours at a time, but just as a supplement.
