Currently Impossible to Purchase Resolve Studio?

PostWed Jan 13, 2021 12:08 am

Hello everyone,

I'm having quite a doozy of a time trying to find a way to purchase this product. I have had a pre-order placed for Studio 17 since September 2020 and the keys for Resolve 16 are no longer on sale. Every certified retailer I've tried simply says they have zero copies of Resolve Studio for both 16 and 17 and frankly this is getting very frustrating.

I've looked at all of the Certified Online Retailers listed on the BMD site, placed preorders with 2 now, and none of them have any way for me to get a key that would let me use ANY version of Studio (16 or 17beta). BH actually charged me the full $330 when I tried doing an order with them on top of the other uncharged preorders I'd placed at Adorama (Sept.2020) and CoreMicro (called before placing an order with them, told none avail).

Sorry to bother with what feels like such a silly question, but I haven't gotten a straight answer from my call to BMD customer service and no responses via email yet either.

I'd like, very much, to purchase this product for use immediately. Is that even possible right now?

A bit extreme, but...you could buy a Pocket 4k. :)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I think either BMD underestimated demand for the Resolve Studio + Speed Editor bundle, or there were resource constraints that meant they couldn't manufacture enough units. Either way it should be a short-term shortage (though it'd be great for the user base if it's not!).

I was able to place a stock alert notification with my local reseller sometime early/mid December, and they received stock just before Christmas (which is all gone now, not sure how long it took to sell through).
HW: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, 64GB DDR4 3600 CL16 RAM, 3x2TB NVMe SSDs (1xGen4, 2xGen3), 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super, dual monitor (4k, 1080P)
SW: DaVinci Resolve Studio 17b7, Win10 Pro 20H2, Nvidia Studio Driver 460.89, latest BIOS/chipset/drivers/etc.

Buy a license for Fusion. Get it from B&H or other online retailers.

They'll send you a dongle and you can use it to run both Resolve and Fusion. They're both useful, and the price for Fusion is the same for Resolve.

This won't help your immediate need, but you are aware of the Speed Editor promotion going on now when you buy Resolve 17? The promo went live after September, and I wouldn't put money on it being retroactive to your pre-order.

My point is, if the Speed Editor is of interest to you, and since you're not having any luck procuring a Resolve 16 license in the mean time, you may just want to cancel your outstanding orders, and reorder to make sure you get in on the fun while you still can.

In the off-chance the resellers you have open orders with refuse to cancel, you can always dispute the charges with your credit card company (pretty sure they'd accept the unexpected, protracted lead time as just cause), and order the promo bundle from Markertek... I've always found them to be solid to work with.

Note that Fusion is not eligible for the promotion, only Resolve.
