2GB GPU sufficient for Resolve 17 for editing 4K footage?

PostFri Jan 15, 2021 8:13 am

For unfortunate reasons, I need to make Resolve function on a sort of a proxy system - exclusively for editing 4K BRAW footage, can be 5:1 to 12:1, 24-60fps. The system has a 8GB RAM and a decent processor.

Please suggest what is the minimum GPU required for the same? My (now malfunctioned) Mac book pro earlier used for this purpose had a 2GB GPU. Will a similar one work for a Ubuntu system as well? Like a GT 1030 GALAX 2GB? Or should look into at least GTX 1050/1050ti. I'm also really really constrained on the budget. So I'm looking for the absolute minimum required.

Once again I only need this system to edit the footage - only assembly. Not even stabilise or retime or color or render. Would prefer smooth running though, even if I have to edit on a 720p timeline.

Does ist need to be a laptop? I'd suggest the Mac mini M1 if it's only for editing.
Under Windows I'd be concerned about stability with only 2 GB VRAM.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

A Mac Mini M1, I think you missed this part of the OP : I'm also really really constrained on the budget

It's a desktop actually but yes, that's my only option. I'll use it with Ubuntu though. If not a 2GB, do you think a GTX 1050TI 4GB would do?

I can only speak for the 1660, which can't handle 50 fps BRAW in UHD. It's OK in an HD timeline, though.
That was under Windows, don't know how well it runs under Linux.

I wouldn't spend money on a GPU with less than 8GB of VRAM.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
