Went through the beginner training and it went through the Project Settings: Color science and Input look up tables quickly.

Does anyone have time to dive in a bit and explain for an amateur?

Color Science - 4 options why would you change this?

LUTs - Should you attempt to always apply a LUTs?


I haven't bought a nice camera yet that is on my list, but I don't want to rush into it. I have been reading up on a BMPCC 6k, but today most of my home videos are from an iPhone and a DJI Osmo Pocket.

There's a section in the Introduction of the Reference Manual called Data Levels, Color Management and ACES. That's an excellent resource on this topic.

not an expert in color but,

i would say as long as you work with "normal" video (rec.709) you don't need to worry to much about the color science.
if you start using log footage things get a little more interesting. than i would suggest using one of the color managed settings. they let you choose your camera color profile and convert automatically to the output color space (rec.709 in most cases for web).

when it comes to luts, i would recommend keeping your hands of them because they can be destructive (clipping highlights for instance). learn to grade your own looks and save them as power grades in resolve. you could also buy power grades if you don't want to invest too much time in grading yourselve. still better than using luts.

I'd like to recommend the video tutorial by the guy himself, Alexis van Hurkman, on the subject of color management sold at Rippletraining. Excellent overview, might be still at introductory discount.
