Screen stops updating (Windows 10, DR 16.2.8.005)

PostSat Jan 16, 2021 11:58 pm

Hi there

I've been using DR for about a year now, got to know a lot of the basics quite well, all going just fine... except something that has happened on and off the whole time...... thought I'd finally ask if anyone else has this issue and knows how to solve it.

Tried searching for similar terms but not exactly sure what other words people would use to describe it.

I'm on Windows 10 (up-to-date) and DR 16.2.8.005 - just updated today in case. (Was on 16.2.6.005 for a while just cos I was doing a bunch of projects....)

Sometimes the screen will just stop updating. If I press L to play, playback happens. K to stop, it stops. Sometimes I can scrub the timeline to get audio to scrub back. If I minimise DR and restore, the screen is entirely white except for the windows title bar at the top.

If I go to close DR, it asks me to save the project, if it hasn't been saved. So *something* of DR is still functioning at this point.

In previous occasions I've been able to close down the currently visible timeline, if I've got Timeline tabs open, then re-open it and it starts working again.

Sometimes I restart DR and everything is fine. Sometimes i restart DR and it doggedly does this screen-stops-updating thing for a while.... I'll make a couple of edits, or 10 mintues or editing, or a couple of hours - it varies - then will go dead again.

Frustrating - but perhaps someone else has come across this?

Thanks for any advice

Chris

Well I hope somebody can help with this... my current project I can do literally one or two clicks before the screen freezes and I have to restart DR.... rather interrupting my work flow ! :D

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks for the link.

My graphics driver is a Intel HD Graphics 4600.

So I'm trying to update that, to see if that's an issue. (Current drivers is Jan 2020, it says....)

Well I have tried to update my graphics driver...

I'm running on an HP laptop - Intel says it can't update the driver as it's an HP-specific driver, so tried to get the latest driver from HP. It's installed something, the website claiming it would be a June 2020 driver, but Windows still says the driver installed is from Jan 2020.

Tried installing it twice, and Windows still says the same thing.... So not exactly sure what's going on there!

But the project I am working on (4k footage, 60fps - higher spec than I have worked on before) is playing ball now, kind of, now.

I'm getting a lot more "Error 38 / GPU error" on screen messages, but I just press Ok and can keep on working....

So, at least progress..!
