Hi All,
Lead up, background, and system specs
After days of trying to (and partially) resolving the issue on my own, I'm finally out of time and answers and need to turn to the professionals. I've been trying to complete a project using DaVinci Resolve, but crashing when loading my project has all but stopped me in my tracks.
The issue: DaVinci Resolve starts, but as soon as I load into my project, it either fails half way through loading it (no thumbnails populated), "Not Responding". The alternative is that it will fully load the project, but as soon as I start doing anything, say change between Cut and Edit, or try to scrub the video, the entire program will freeze up again.
Davinci 17.0b - my big regret here was upgrading to 17 while trying to troubleshoot, and not knowing about the database until it was too late. I wish I could turn back time and go back to 16, but alas, it's too late. I see dozens of posts from others lamenting that they did not backup their version 16 database, as I also found out too late that it could not be downgraded. If the fallout on these forums is any evidence, my one suggestion would be to automate this backup process for users who upgrade and avoid all the heartache.
System Specs
AMD 5900x
AMD 6800 XT
32GB DDR4 3600
X570 Motherboard
The Problem
Some background. Initially, I ran into this issue and it appeared to be driver related. I removed the most recent AMD drivers and installed the last WHQL "Major Release" driver, 20.11.2, and the issue was resolved! I happily edited along for days like this without a single hitch. Then, suddenly, it was back! The next steps I took involved totally purging Davinci, totally purging my drivers (DDU), and reinstalling everything with careful reboots in between each step. This again resolved the issue and I spent another night happily editing away.
The issue also appears directly related to my project in some way. I've tried moving EVERYTHING over to one drive, whether its the clips, the timelines, my cache directories. Everything is on my primary C: drive now (NVME m.2 SSD drive) but this has not helped. If I open a brand new project, or another project with very little changes made to it, it seems fine and I do not experience the crash. So what gives, why is my project so intermittent, and what can I change to recoup this thing and get working again? Files types are .mp4s, most of them are small, a few of them are large. I have also tried purging the render cache, and have purged all of Davinci multiple times now.
Summary
Now, here it is, Saturday night and the crashing continues to plague my life. I have over 10 hours trying to fix this issue. I'm at wits end and considering throwing in the towel on Resolve. This is my last-ditch effort to fix things before I move on. Let me know what additional information I can provide.
I have attached my diagnostic log files to this ticket.
