Troubleshooting - Constant Crashing DaVinci 17

Hi All,

Lead up, background, and system specs
After days of trying to (and partially) resolving the issue on my own, I'm finally out of time and answers and need to turn to the professionals. I've been trying to complete a project using DaVinci Resolve, but crashing when loading my project has all but stopped me in my tracks.

The issue: DaVinci Resolve starts, but as soon as I load into my project, it either fails half way through loading it (no thumbnails populated), "Not Responding". The alternative is that it will fully load the project, but as soon as I start doing anything, say change between Cut and Edit, or try to scrub the video, the entire program will freeze up again.

Davinci 17.0b - my big regret here was upgrading to 17 while trying to troubleshoot, and not knowing about the database until it was too late. I wish I could turn back time and go back to 16, but alas, it's too late. I see dozens of posts from others lamenting that they did not backup their version 16 database, as I also found out too late that it could not be downgraded. If the fallout on these forums is any evidence, my one suggestion would be to automate this backup process for users who upgrade and avoid all the heartache.

System Specs
AMD 5900x
AMD 6800 XT
32GB DDR4 3600
X570 Motherboard

The Problem
Some background. Initially, I ran into this issue and it appeared to be driver related. I removed the most recent AMD drivers and installed the last WHQL "Major Release" driver, 20.11.2, and the issue was resolved! I happily edited along for days like this without a single hitch. Then, suddenly, it was back! The next steps I took involved totally purging Davinci, totally purging my drivers (DDU), and reinstalling everything with careful reboots in between each step. This again resolved the issue and I spent another night happily editing away.

The issue also appears directly related to my project in some way. I've tried moving EVERYTHING over to one drive, whether its the clips, the timelines, my cache directories. Everything is on my primary C: drive now (NVME m.2 SSD drive) but this has not helped. If I open a brand new project, or another project with very little changes made to it, it seems fine and I do not experience the crash. So what gives, why is my project so intermittent, and what can I change to recoup this thing and get working again? Files types are .mp4s, most of them are small, a few of them are large. I have also tried purging the render cache, and have purged all of Davinci multiple times now.

Summary

Now, here it is, Saturday night and the crashing continues to plague my life. I have over 10 hours trying to fix this issue. I'm at wits end and considering throwing in the towel on Resolve. This is my last-ditch effort to fix things before I move on. Let me know what additional information I can provide.

I have attached my diagnostic log files to this ticket.

Look for an object you have placed on the timeline that is odd.

I had a jpg that would render at X2 size for no reason.

Obviously, Resolve 17 is pretty stable for most people.

So it is what you have added or an effect (with a bug) you have applied.

Or some system related issue like a memory or drive problem. I always start with that level of error seeking no matter what.

Can I check if you have automatic Windows driver updates turned off?

The symptoms - good drivers going bad after a few days - certainly points to that.

I too will try this, thanks Shrinivas. @meticulous7 it's been one hell of a week for all resolve users - that much I can tell ya.

Hi Shrinivas,

My apologies for the delayed response, I have not had time to revisit this issue over the last week.

I verified within Windows that my driver has not been updated by Windows. I verified this both in the AMD software and within Device Manager. To be sure, I disabled driver updates per instruction in the article, and DDU'd my driver again and reinstalled fresh. Alas the issue is still occurring.

It does not appear to be the driver reinstall that has been fixing the issue, but rather the total clean install of Resolve. I cannot afford to reinstall the program every time I go to use it as it is quite the time consuming process.

I was hoping to get some serious editing done today and alas I cannot load my project. I saw the update about looking for out of place things that could be causing the crash, but I don't even get a moment to remove things from the project before the crash occurs. 90% of the time the project never loads, but when it does, within 30 seconds of doing anything it crashes on me.

I did update to version 17b7 today, I was so excited and optimistic that it would fix my issue. Alas it did not.

In the provided logs, are there any kinds of errors that may point us in the right direction? I really want to stay with Resolve, but this is the 3 night of getting work done I've lost to this crash, and well over 10 hours of troubleshooting. I do not want to switch products but I feel I'm being forced to.

Please refer to this post for creating diagnostic logs for startup issues.

In addition, please right click the project in the project manger and choose Export (and save the DRP).

Please place the DRP alongside the logs and NFO and provide a link.

You may wish to check if reimporting the DRP file still continues to crash.

Quick update:

Last night I had 3 glorious hours of being able to use Resolve (17b7)! I had a few miscellaneous crashes, and once it started throwing a GPU Memory Full error, but otherwise the program was great and totally responsive. In the few crash instances, I was able to restart without a problem.

Alas, today I returned to run Resolve, and I am faced with the instant crash issue again upon loading up my project. During my session yesterday, I had closed out and reloaded multiple times without issue, but today I am unable to even get into the project. I get the project manager window, choose my current project, DaVinci begins to load and a few thumbnails populate, but then the program completely freezes "Not Responding" and will hang that way indefinitely until I force-close it.

Based on some feedback online, I tried setting the process to a higher CPU priority, but this did not help. The crash happens within 30 seconds of trying to load the project.

Hi,

I tried uploading but it will not let me add either file, they are both over 1 MB. How can I attach them? One is 1.06MB and one is 1.25MB

(Sorry for the 3 separate updates)

Just to confirm, I also tried re-importing the .drp file, but it instantly crashed. Tried loading it several time and no luck.

Another bit of weirdness. Like 1 out of 4 times, Davinci doesn't crash, and the project loads, but I never get any sort of previews or video playback. When this happens, everything within Davinci is operational, but I cannot play anything or see any thumbnails.

I was able to zip the .nfo and Resolve logs, but I could not get the .drp file under 1MB. I do not readily have anywhere available to host this file. I'll see what I can do.

Logs attached to this comment, .nfo attached to next comment

Here, I have hosted the .drp at a Google drives folder. Please let me know as soon as you have retrieved it so I can take the URL down
