GPU acceleration - what does it mean and will it help me?

Hi there,

I’ve been looking to upgrade from Final Cut to DaVinci resolve studio. I’ve just started running the free version, which is brilliant but I have a question before I make the move.

I know the way that graphics are handled is different in studio, however right now, if I put an effect on a clip in the edit window such as the digital glitch effect - my frames drop from 30 to 1.

This is on 1080p footage, on my MacBook pro 16 inch from late 2019 running an i9 processor, 16gb of RAM and the Radeon 5500M with 4gb RAM. I have got render cache enabled, and in settings I’ve told the software to exclusively use my GPU and not switch between both that and the CPU.

Is this an issue that would be solved with the way graphics are handled in Studio? I haven’t been able to get a straight answer from forums yet, but if you can answer that then I’ll be happy to purchase the software!

I'm still "transitioning" from PP I'm not an expert yet ;) but, I see your only running 4gb ram which is a "no, no". You should have at the bare bones minimum 8gb and that's pushing it. I'm running 16gb on an i7 with a 1050ti and still have issues with some (Fusion) titles/transitions. I would suggest putting at least 4gb for a total of 8gb and see how it works. You should see some type of improvement. If that works then add 8 more for 16gb... then you should not have as many problems with 1080 footage. You can try to change your resolution to 1/2 or 1/4 but I don't think that will help. I don't believe the Free version utilizes the GPU nearly as much as the Studio from what the "experts" say.

P.S. Don't even try to use 4k footage with that setup. Your computer will turn around and smack you in the head :o

Good luck!

Not sure that's true. Decoding and encoding are handled differently, but I believe the image processing is the same in both Free and Studio.

And Roger is not wrong. Your hardware is...less than ideal for Resolve.

The problem is, a proper nVidia RTX GPU is very hard to come by these days.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
