That definitely should not happen. I have had some timelines disappear "momentarily" in Resolve 16, but usually if I exited the program, then relaunched and reloaded the session file, everything is fine. My suspicion is that there's a refresh problem where the timelines are actually there, but either the database is corrupted and won't reveal the timeline, or it's just not visually appearing on the edit or color page. I have seen cases where I had 6 or 7 timelines in a project, the first timeline momentarily disappeared, then I flipped back and forth to different timelines... and the original reappeared. But it's extremely rare, and hasn't happened in the last year.
I'm a big fan of manually Exporting a backup for every session I do, every single day, because I know if disaster strikes, I can just bring one of those in and keep working. I emphasize that Resolve has been extremely reliable for me -- I doubt if I've had 2 crashes this year, and I've already worked at least 15 days so far -- and I've almost never had to use a backup. (The new "Export Timeline" function in 17 will no doubt make this even easier.)
Be aware that 17 is a Beta and weird things can happen. I think the engineers are working tirelessly around the clock to chase the bugs, but you should get in touch with BMD Support and send them both the bad DRP and the good one and see if they have any answers.
