Resolve Studio out of stock at distributor

PostTue Jan 19, 2021 3:41 pm

Hey,

I ordered Resolve Studio + Speed Editor from Scandinavian Photo in Sweden and unfortunately it's not in stock at the moment. I don't really need the Speed Editor, I'm almost exclusively interested in just getting a license for Resolve Studio so I called then and asked them if I could just have the license sent before they get the Speed Editor in stock. Unfortunately, they told me that they have neither the Speed Editor nor standalone licenses in stock and they have no idea when they will receive either.

In addition, I called another Swedish distributor and the guy immediately said they too have nothing at all in stock and they too have no idea when it will be, he didn't even have to check. He seemed pretty annoyed at the question as if it was a question he was tired of answering...

Am I right to assume that I am unable to purchase a software that Blackmagic Design is doing its best to give away for free with every purchase of random hardware? I mean... it's software, making additional copies of it is essentially free and here I am, will to pay money for it.

Any ideas on how I can get ahold of this rare mythological software without buying shady licenses on eBay?

Couple things.

1. Studio isn't free in this context. There is currently a promotion which gets you the hardware for free when you buy the software.

That distinction is important because folks have purchased the Speed Editor and thought they would get Studio for free, as happens with a camera purchase.

Nope.

2. Studio has two licenses, an activation card or a dongle, both of which are physical products that get shipped to retailers, and from them to customers.

3. Currently, there is a shortage of physical products to be shipped. You're not alone.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

What I meant is that Resolve Studio is typically included with the purchase of a camera or other hardware. I was not talking about it being free with the Speed Editor. I am aware that the Speed Editor is included with the software, not vice versa. It wouldn't have mattered if I ordered the software only without the Speed Editor since nothing is in stock. I was mainly making the point that since Studio is shipped with cameras for free, it seems surprising that it would be so hard to get ahold of the license separately even with money.

I'm also aware of this. It still doesn't seem reasonable to me that any other product than the dongle version would be physical. Especially since if the product was distributed digitally, this situation would never arise. I have no desire for a pretty box shipped to me, I only want to use the software.

A view many editors share.

I can't say for certain that this is BMD's exclusive distribution methodology, but when I received my DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor bundle, the software came on an SD card in a separate sealed retail package, along with the activation code printed on essentially a plastic credit card, so those items are indeed physical. I see nothing on BMD's website indicating the option for direct purchase from them. So, although upgrades to DR Studio can be downloaded directly, it appears that physical purchase of the initial product from a reseller is the only option as of now.

The man in a green visored hat in the BMD back room has to copy down all the license keys in his ledger book before the cards can be sent out to retailers. When someone opens Resolve and enters a key, a pimple faced nerd at the BMD server copies down the key on his Taco Bell napkin which passes through several hands before reaching the green visored man who looks up the key in his ledger book. Depending on whether the key is in the ledger book or not, he passes the answer back to the server nerd on the Taco Bell napkin and who then clicks the “accept” or “reject” button. This all happens while Resolve is opening the projects database.

Emil, PM me if you're interested in buying a brand new, unused license (activation key). Still shrink-wrapped. The packaging is for v16 but of course it works for v17 as well. I bought it from CVP just before they ran out of stock.

Kan skickas, eller hämtas i Göteborg.

Ha! You almost had me, but that last bit gave you away. Opening the projects database wouldn't be nearly enough time for all of what you claimed to transpire.

Now, if you had said that that all happened while DR was "Looking for Control Surfaces," I would have believed you without question.

All things finally arrived, both software and Speed Editor.

Now I just have to solve the crashes while rendering denoised footage :'(
