2010 macbook pro: DaVinci Resolve crash on start up 16.2.5

PostWed Jan 20, 2021 12:23 am

Hi,

I'm new to video editing and a friend recommended DaVinci Resolve to me. I downloaded the program on the app store (on another computer since mine is so old). Then I logged into my account on my own computer and downloaded the last compatible version with my 2010 macbook pro. The version that was downloaded from the app store is 16.2.5.

When I try to open the program, the load screen crashes after "looking for control surface"...I have spent most of the night trying to download older versions since version 10. All either won't download, immediately crash, or crash after a few messages on the load screen. Version 15 got all the way through "loading waveform monitor" before freezing.

There are a host of youtube videos about downloading drivers for non-macs to fix start-up issues, but I can't find a solution for mac...

Is there a version that I can download with/without a workaround that I can use with my ancient laptop? Here are my specs:

macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
MacBook Pro mid 2010
Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 288 MB

Thanks for reading!

Sorry, but the minimum system requirements for DaVinci Resolve states: "16 GB of system memory is recommended and 32 GB is recommended minimum when using Fusion"

Even if you had more memory, the Intel HD Graphics might not be powerful enough to run Resolve (unless your laptop also has a separate GPU).

Time for a change. The software may be free, the hardware needed is not.
Right now I'm running it on my wife's brand new MacBook Air M1 and I'm impressed. That thing flies.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Studio 19.1.3
MacOS 13.7.4, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580 + eGPU
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, MacOS 14.7.2
SE, USM G3
