Fix this annoying bug

PostWed Jan 20, 2021 11:39 pm

I have a problem from the beginning of ver 17. Clips on the timeline or in the color page sometimes looks like: Media offline. After restart everything is ok, till the next time. Sometimes i notice that something is missing after the render and then i have to render once again. Please, do something about it. We have 7th version and still got the same problem.

Never seen that in any version of Resolve that I have used. Are your clips on an external drive connected by USB? If so make sure that the USB hubs are not set to turn off.

My experience is similar to Charles'. My media just doesn't go offline by itself.

There was a bug in the early betas where loading up an older project would show some random clips offline, but that's been corrected. But even before it got corrected, once those clips were Relinked, they stayed online.

I store all my files on HDD. Just at this moment its happening again. It was weird for me, that no one said a word about it. So where is the problem?

Another possibility if you are using a laptop and a usb powered external drive. When the computer is working on processor intensive tasks it is not capable of supplying enough power to the USB bus. The solution being a powered hub.

I apologize that my response may not be that helpful, but I ran into the same issue as you, early on.

I am unsure if the newest version just worked well with the graphics card I have, or it had to do with me updating the drivers. I realized I was one or two drivers "behind" and I haven't experienced it since (knock on wood, as they say)

I had this happening to me a couple of times too.
It said that some media are offline (on the timeline), but everything was looking "fine" in the media pool.
I had some renders stopping because of that. And yeah, all the media are on internal drives. I didn't have this with.

It's not the Nvidia driver is it - just saw this:

You were right. I didn't have the latest nvidia driver. However, after the update, it's still the same. Could someone explain the last post? Is this mean, that someone identified this problem already?

I had this problem too sometimes, I don't know, so I really don't know what's causing it.
Try to just do a "replace selected clip" in the media pool, and select the same file to see if it change something.

This has not been true since about 2009 for anyone who used esata, and is not true for anyone at all since Usb3. It works just fine as long as usb suspend is disabled.

To the OP: I had this issue in b7. It was resolved for me after installing nvidea studio driver 460.89 and allowing Win 10 to update (my studio pc is offline. I only update when I need to solve an issue).

I just remember a recent video from Linus Tech Tips about them upgrading of their network, they are directly working from files hosted on their server for years now. 8k raw video files (I'm not sure about the raw, but 8k for sure)

Now they have a 25Gbits for each editors directly connected to their server where all the videos files are.

And I see tons of people working directly from their Synology NAS with a 10Gbits connection (of course you have to have good drives, SSDs or else)

Many people use external NVMe drives connected with USB-C on their laptop (or desktop) too.

Well, I disagree.

Speed isn't so much the issue, the ability to remove the drive is, so...I think it will always be true.

There is no logic in this or evidence for it. Simply disagreeing does not change the facts. Saying that the ability to remove a drive from your computer is problematic in regard to using Davinci Resolve is a bit like saying the ability to remove a wheel from your car is problematic to driving. Even if you do it, you will soon know it is missing. Put it back on and you can carry on. :D

If you attempt to use a slow external drive you may have issues, but the problem isn't it being external. It is that it is slow. Think wrong sized wheel. If you fail to assign a consistent and permanent drive letter to your external drive you will have problems. Again, the 'external' part is not at fault. Switching to an internal drive would give the appearance of solving the problem, but the real solution is much simpler. Assign a drive letter. Think replacing whole car in the event of a flat tyre.

You most certainly can use extenal drives with Davinci resolve without issue. I do it all day, every day.

Apologies to the OP for this tangent, but misinformation, however well intentioned, is not helpful and should be addressed.

I can't seem to get the files online no matter what.

The files are .mov files, are they not supported? Should I convert to something else? I already tried 3 different folders on 2 different drives, and always same. They never appear online.

If I used the relink folder -button, still nothing.

Plenty of space on both of the drives too. Just updated to latest beta-version. I guess next I try restart the whole PC.

Mov is a container format but doesn’t describe the 100 variations you can put in that container.

I'm having the same problem. Makes no difference if the files are located on one of my external drives or my main SSD drive. Trying to relink them does not work, just get the same Media Offline for all clips in a project. I'm trying to load one of the tutorial projects.

I'm also having the same problem consistently. Even after I create a new timeline. I've also tried deleting the entire cache folder and rebuilding it. Please fix this quick. I'm at a stand still and in the middle of several jobs.

This was one of the files that's having trouble.

Same here - Media offline. (but it's not!)
It's an occasional problem and has been appearing after moving from 17.0b7 to 17.0b9.

Example: I had a project with 30 clips from the same folder.
A clip or 2 or 3 would suddenly show Media offline.
Restart Resolve. All clips back online and play/scrub fine.
Later, a completely different clip or 2 or 3 would show Media offline.

I can't see any pattern to when it happens.
(Edit: It's like Resolve loses it's bearings/pointer to the file location even though it's still there.)
Closing Resolve and starting back up clears it up.
Until it happens again.....
This is editing projects that were started in previous builds of Resolve.

Well Resolve doesn't crash, so will that still help?
(Help menu - create logs to desktop)

I have had a number of crashes lately, I believe to GPU full trying to export 4k Speed Warp clips.
Here is the latest logs that show some crashes over the last week or so.

And I would be glad to upload logs next time it happens, but will it capture if it doesn't crash?

Yeah, we are hoping to see some error messages in the log which might give us a clue why Resolve is not able to read the source clip correctly.

Media offline.....

This moment it is showing Media Offline in a cross dissolve video transition.
Same project as earlier other problems. (but has happened in multiple other projects)
But earlier problems was the actual clip(s) offline in media panel and timeline.
Was working on it fine for 30 min, then glitch.
Closed Resolve (took an extra long like 2 min for the program to clear out of task manager), and worked fine again.

Last bit of info that might be useful:
This project was originally started in Resolve Studio 16 last release, worked on it some in several 17 betas, 17.0b7 seemed to be trouble free, 17.0b9 the problems appeared.

Nvidia video drivers: (but I guess you can see driver version in logs?)
Resolve minimum recommended driver of 451.82
My current driver: 452.06 studio

Going to upgrade to: 457.30 studio
as there are reports that this is problematic?? -> Studio 461.40

I'm running Beta 9 with the Studio-Driver 461.40 and the problem still randomly occurs

It happens especially in projects which have a significant number of files in the media pool when switching between Media and Edit Page or between timelines.

The system seems to have problems by generating the thumbnails. After a while they appear again. Sometimes it helps to drag one of the "media offline" clips to the timeline.

Uodating the video driver seemed to solve this in b7, but it seems to have returned in beta 9 unfortunately. Today it happened with a new project today. Always .mov files, various compression formats.

I've had it happen with footage on an external SSD as well as an internal SSD.

I've had it happen with fusion clips I had previously created as well as .mov files.
