Resolve Will Not Start.

PostFri Jan 22, 2021 12:38 am

So, I tried to updating to Davinci 16.2.8 from 16.2.7, (Free Versions) and ever since installation the program has not started up. It gets stuck on Loading Waveform Monitor. I've tried rolling back my graphics card drivers to what I believe they were back when the program was working, I've re-updated them back to current versions, I've tried to re-install 16.2.7 (Still doesn't work) I've taken advice from IT guys to run the event log, it just said that Davinci stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. I've also renamed my appdata file... nothing worked.
I've had a great user experience with this program up to this point.
I have projects on the go...wondering if there could be a possible solution to this issue.
Thanks.

Please see the faqs for guidance and list all he details of your system, exact detail on os, gpu, gpu driver etc etc.
renaming app data files was probably not the right move but the davinci generated diagnostic logs and a NFO will help someone to advise you

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

In the Windows Task Manager, kill anything with the word nahimic in it, in both the Apps and Background Processes areas.

Watch to see that it doesn't restart by itself.

Once all the nahimic stuff is gone, try to launch Resolve.

Hello there!
So I tried going into task manager and I closed everything that had the word nahimic in it...then tried launching Resolve...still nothing...

Anything else I can try?
Thanks.

Resolve is crashing during the GPU initialization phase. Nahimic can cause that to happen.

If it's not that, then perhaps its AMD driver related. I have an RX580 in a test system, and until recently, the AMD Driver app has said 20.11.2 is the proper version. Earlier this week, it added that an update was available: 21.1.1. You appear to have 20.12.1 currently installed, as best I can tell from your NFO. According to the AMD site, that supports the RX580, so would seem to be OK to use. But maybe a different driver would help.

And while I don't think this normally causes a GPU related crash, some USB devices are known to prevent a proper Resolve startup. So an easy test of that is to remove any USB devices you have connected, except for a standard USB keyboard and mouse, and see if that helps.

So, I've already tried different GPU drivers (I'll try again).....I also tried disconnecting all USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) that didn't work either...
Is there anything else I can try?

I suppose starting Windows in safe mode wouldn't help because resolve wouldn't start anyway because of missing drivers.
Perhaps disable everything that starts with Windows ("mscfg" command, startup tab)

Would I still be able to access my projects if I did that?

When you upgrade from Resolve 16 to Resolve 17, you'll need to allow it to upgrade the database. Once the database is upgraded, the 16 projects will be available in 17. But once this is done, those projects won't open in 16. Resolve 17 projects are not compatible with Resolve 16.

That's why it's important to make a backup of the Resolve 16 database, before you allow 17 to upgrade it. Then you can get back to 16 with the existing projects, if needed.

Re: Resolve Will Not Start.

So, here's what I'm trying to do.
I looked at my Davinci Resolve project server and there wasn't a data base to be found. So I created a new data base but there is no projects in the new data base.
I've also saved my project file on a separate hard drive hoping that I could just move said project file to the new data base that I created. After doing that I'd hoped to back up the data base, then upgrade to the Free Version of Davinci 17 and then hope against hope that 17 reads my project file. (Now located in the new data base)

However, what is happening is that when I go to move my project file to the new data base, it won't move over... it shows the copy sign so it should be able to be copied but it just won't.

Am I doing something wrong here? Is there anything else that I could do?

Thanks! -heroacromatt

The Project Server app is only for PostgreSQL databases.

It will not show your Disk databases. When you install Resolve on a system, that will create a default Disk database, but not any PostgreSQL databases. In that scenario, if you opened the Project Server app, you would not see anything. But you still have at least one Disk database, and that's likely where the projects are.

If you select a PostgreSQL database in the Project Server app, you can't do things with projects there. You can SEE projects, but you can't load or export or import projects in the Project Server app.

You have to use the Resolve app Project Manager page to do things like that.

What form is your project on the separate hard drive? As a Project Export .drp file? If so, you should be able to drag that into either type of database, on the Resolve Project Manager page. But not in the Project Server app.

My project file type is a Data Base File (.db)

Should I be able to transfer that file into my data base?

No. You should not be messing directly with .db files, as a rule.

How did the .db file get on the external drive? Is it in a Project folder in a Disk database on that drive?

No, the file is not in a project folder in a Disk database.

When Resolve initially stopped working, the first thing I did was try to find the project file so that I could save it elsewhere in case I needed to re-install un-install, delete etc.
I'm guessing I have the wrong file?

Provide a link to the .db file, and I'll make it into a .drp you can import, if the .db file is a valid file.

Alright, so I got the .drp file that you sent, and I tried un-installing/deleting everything that had to do with Davinci or Blackmagic Design on my computer. Once I did that then I installed Resolve 16.2.8 and tried to open the .drp file in Davinci...and it still didn't work. All it does is it loads all the pages but stops loading once it gets to the Waveform Monitor, just as it's been doing from the beginning.
Should I try installing the free version of Resolve 17 and see if the .drp works on that? Or is there anything else I should try.
Thanks!

Are you saying you can run Resolve and start a new project OK? The issue is that Resolve hangs when you load the .drp I sent? But other projects are OK?

If so, then send a Resolve log and NFO file after such a hang.

No! Resolve will not run period. It always has hung up when it gets to loading the Waveform Monitor.
It's no different when I try and run the .drp that you sent.

Re: Resolve Will Not Start.

PostWed Feb 10, 2021 8:53 pm

Okay, I apologize for my lack of clarity.
Here's what happens.
-I have the .drp file that you sent saved on my computer.
-I try to open the .drp file with Davinci Resolve. (Meaning I right click the .drp and click "Open with... Davinci Resolve"
-Resolve starts to load all the different pages. (Media Page, Cut page, Edit page, Color page etc)
-Then Resolve gets stuck on "Loading Waveform Monitor"

The software itself never actually starts up. (Meaning, it never actually opens the .drp file so that you're IN the actual software)
This scenario also happens when I try and start Resolve just by clicking it on my desktop (or wherever else the application is saved.) It never gets to the "Project Manager". It ALWAYS gets stuck on "Loading Waveform Monitor"

Does that make sense?
Thanks again!

Yes, that makes sense, thanks.

Since this is the fix of the day, please try this:

Disconnect any USB devices you have connected, except for a wired USB keyboard and mouse.

This includes USB connected cameras and audio devices, USB hubs, USB headsets, USB HDMI video capture dongles and USB Bluetooth dongles. Anything other than a wired keyboard and mouse.

Now does Resolve launch?

You can certainly try Resolve 17.

Do you have any existing 16 projects you care about?

If you do, make a copy of this folder and put it someplace safe:

Not exactly the point of this thread, but using your quote, can I restore a DR16 database backup to a new DR17 install, with nothing but the default database in it? Will I be asked to upgrade the backup?

my understanding is that you can restore a database then resolve 17 will ask to upgrade the database.
as well as you can backup a database before upgrade it.

what I do, is open 17, backup the database maned [project_v16]
restore the database back and change name to [project_v17]
then upgrade the v17 database
tnen start to work, so you know which version 10 is the backup and which version 17 is the current.
