EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra Report

PostFri Jan 22, 2021 1:02 am

I joined the EVGA queue for a RTX 3090 back on October 5th. Finally was my turn to buy a couple days ago.

Picked up an EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra for $1799 + tax and Shipping.

System before upgrade:

Supermicro 7047gr-trf
2x XEON 2697 v2
256gb 1866 Mhz DDR3 system ram
3 x 1080ti
8x 2tb SSD raid 5
Decklink 4k 12G Extreme
Win 10
Resolve 16.2.8
Nvidia driver 460.89

Pulled the 3 x 1080ti gpus and replaced with the single 3090.

First impressions in Resolve so far:

- No more "Out of GPU Memory" errors in 4k timelines.

- The Fusion page is usable now. With the 1080ti the fusion page was laggy, buggy, and prone to crash. Now it feels like I can throw anything at it and it's very responsive.

Very happy so far with this purchase! :D

How is the processing performance compared to the 3x1080Ti?

I thought the MSRP on those was supposed to be $1499. What gives?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The NVidia FE version is $1499. Custom AIBs vary. This one is listed as $1800 from the EVGA store.

A colleague got two of these at the price of €2000 each for LW/Octane Renderer. The price seems about right.

I should have ran a series of benchmark renders on the old cards vs the new for an accurate % increase in processing speed. I was too excited when I got the card and immediately started tearing my computer apart.

I do have a VERY intense timeline using 5 frame Best NR and 4 X super scale. With the 3 x 1080ti I got 2-4 fps. Getting about 8.5 fps with the single 3090.

Anecdotally, the single 3090 feels faster in all tasks compared to the 3 x 1080ti.

When you do a lot of upscalling, Topaz Video Enhance AI might be the better program.

If you want near perfection, use Neatvideo for denoising and VEAI for upscaling.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Good looking out! I'll look into it.

I use Neat extensively! It's truly the best for noise reduction, but often the Resolve NR does a sufficient job and renders faster.

That’s right, I also use it for difficult footage only.
The same applies to VEAI, in some cases SuperScale is enough and it’s much faster.
BTW, VEAI can de-interlace now.
