Having the ability to export a drt is awesome, but we are noticing that it strips all of the group data from the timeline.

At a minimum it would be nice if it would at least collapse the group data, though ideally it would maintain groups when transferring between projects.

I'm no expert.

Can clips from different timelines be in the same group? If so, I can see some difficulty in giving you what you want here.

No reason why the added timelines groups couldn't contain a unique identifier (aka prefix), or if a group contained a UUID you could even have it be so that matching groups could update and relink.

Like I mentioned in the original post, at the very least collapsing group grades would make sense.

What if the colorist importing the timeline doesn't care about the Groups created by another, and doesn't want his carefully created Groups altered in any way?

I addressed that in the previous post. Google UUID. Essentially groups would only link if they were the exact same groups. Though have a preference of whether to prefer import or existing in case of a conflict would be a smart idea even with this functionality.
