Decompose to Original makes nodes not shared anymore

PostWed Jan 27, 2021 8:28 pm

If you have a clip that has a shared node in Color and then apply "Render in Place" followed by "Decompose to Original", the shared node is still there but it is no longer shared. Is this a bug or intended behavior?

It's a bit annoying if you're using Render in Place for freezing tracks that are "done" to lighten the system load and then decompose it because you want to adjust it again. My assumption is that if you Render in Place and then decompose, everything would be identical afterwards.

What do you mean 'not shared'? Other clips with that node have it disabled?

What I mean is that the node that used to be a shared node is no longer a shared node after decomposing. It has the same settings as the shared node but it no longer linked to it so making changes to the shared node does not affect the decomposed clip. Additionally, the no-longer-shared node has no name.

Good catch! Sounds like a tricky situation for the devs, but also a bug. If you can't revert a Render In Place to the exact situation before the render, that makes Render In Place too tricky to use. (It can work that way, so it's not totally useless, but having to keep track of things you did that it will properly revert and things you did that it won't revert would mean that in practice few would use it.)

I can see where this might not be a bug, just the way it works.

Peter would know.
