Effects on text

PostThu Jan 28, 2021 12:41 am

Hi everybody, I hope you're well.

I am trying to emulate the effects on the text of this video : "Samm Henshaw - Broke (Lyric Video)" (sorry, I don't have the authorization to publish URLs) but none of the methods I've tried yielded convincing results. Probably because I'm a beginner and ignore a lot of the possibilities of the software.
First of all, I've noticed it's impossible to add effects to a mere Text clip. Making the text clip a compound clip allows to add effects, but the effects then seems to be added to the other video tracks as well... and I've not managed to emulate the effects of the video properly anyway. I had assumed "Camera Shake" and "Ripples" would make the trick but I haven't managed to come up with something convincing.
I've also tried with the pitch and yaw settings, with no convincing results.

Anybody would recognize the method used in this video ? A thousand thanks :P

Please excuse me in advance if this question doesn't have its place on the forum.

Take care,

Charlie

You can just put a space in the URL somewhere.

Is this the one?

Which "text" are you trying to use? There's a difference between "text" and "text+." The plain one is a legacy title tool, and it'll say "basic title" when you drag it to the timeline. That one won't let you drag OpenFX effects onto it. The Text+ one will, though.

Actually, all of the Titles listed under the "Fusion Titles" category are just dressed-up text+'s. They're basically preset Fusion compositions. If you put one on the timeline, park your playhead over it, then switch to the Fusion page, you can pick it apart to see how it works. If the above link is the one you were talking about and you have R17b, you should dissect the "Jitter" title first.

Stacking OpenFX or ResolveFX (basically same thing) on top of Fusion text+'s on the Edit page is a viable way to get stuff done and sometimes easier than bespoke Fusion compositions, but when you do, the Fusion operations still get processed first, and you can run into problems if you don't know whats going on because somebody else designed the Fusion preset (Alpha channel issues, premultiplication problems, and timeline scaling/cropping are the three big ones that come to mind).

Hey Jason,

Thanks a lot for your reply and for finding the video. It's the one indeed !

I had tried "text" and had noticed it's impossible to drag effects onto it. I then switched to "Text+", but found that when adding a "Camera Shake", for example, the effect is nowhere to be found, whether in the Inspector or in the nodes in the Fusion page... Moreover, any effects like "Camera Shake" or "Waviness", for example, make the letters move indeed but either leave a still black shadow of the letters or make other clips move as well. There's probably something I am not aware of here.

So my only choice is to use a Fusion text+ preset composition and tweak it as you kindly suggested. I won't have the problem of stacking other effects because of the two problems I've just described.

I should have mentioned (my bad, sorry guys) that I have Resolve 15, so no "Jitter"... The closest I've found is "Title text ripple". Tweaking and keyframing a lot its "wave generation" node, I might be able to get something approaching - but still definitely not what we can see in the video...

Many many thanks from France for your time and help !

Take care,

Charlie

I've finally managed to get a satisfying result, figured I'd let it know here in case it interests somebody later.

Thanks again Jason, the "Jitter" effect is indeed what I was looking for. In Resolve 15, I used "FastNoise" in the foreground of a "Displace", and then added a "CameraShake" to give a little rotation. There are actually a few tutorials on YouTube.

Take care !
