AMD RX 6800 XT recommended settings

PostThu Jan 28, 2021 6:09 am

Hi guys, i just switched from an Nvidia 2070 to an AMD 6800xt. I'm really new to AMD so are there any recommended settings i can use to get the most out of it in Resolve? I mostly edit 6k BM RAW footage and doing some light stuff in Fusion.

I know that the 6800xt is quite a lot slower than the Nvidia 30xx series regarding the Puget Systems Benchmark but i also read a thread somewhere where they say basically the opposite. Anyway, i don't really care if i wait a few seconds longer but i just want to make sure that i get the most out of the 6800xt.
Looking forward to hear your experiences!

Sadly i have some bad news for your ... The Radeon cards don't play well with Davinci Resolve 17 at all ...

To blame is either the driver or the program itself, since clearly the team focuses more on the Nvidia cards.

Go back to Resolve 16, and there is not much to discuss about settings .. it's the same stuff as with Nvidia cards, only this time you have to use OpenCL instead of CUDA.

Thanks Ohimbz, what exactly doesn't play well? Are they just slow in DR 17 or do they cause crashes too?

For starters it takes a lot to show thumbnails when you first load a project... and everything is very sluggish ... it didn't happen with the GTX 1080Ti.

I had to go back to Resolve 16 which exhibits the same issue but at least here in ~ 1-2 minutes you can start editing. Again ... GTX 1080Ti the program loaded everything right away .

You will see that when you first load a project with a Radeon card that you can't play or see anything until the program loads the thumbnails and this takes a while when you have large projects.

Another issue is that when i'm using Sony A7III 4K video files i get glitches in the images while editing .. it doesn't happen with files in another codec. i generated optimized media files and it doesn't glitch but still takes a while till it shows anything so you can start editing.

You will be stuck like this for a while ! A bug reported by other Radeon users as well!

Thanks, well you make me think of sending the 6800xt back and waiting for 3080 or 3090 when they are available for 'normal' prices..

As much as i love AMD products, i can't recommend a Radeon card for using Resolve .. be it's the fault of the program or the driver .. doesn't matter .. if you plan to edit in Resolve .. AMD is not the way to go .. and it's kinda sad if you ask me.

From the Pudget Premiere Pro benches it seems that the Radeon cards do fine there ... i might actually go back to Premiere if they don't figure this out eventually .. it's cheaper for me to change the software than the hardware.

I have never encountered GPU memory full with Radeon cards as opposed to Nvidia (user reports say it's not connected to the amount of VRAM onboard). Initial footage loading times seem to happen only on first load of the program and it's not in minutes, at least not in my case. If you don't quit Resolve, footage load as expected when loading different projects.

Radeons are pretty great at TNR. Premiere is nowhere as GPU dependent as Resolve is.

However, 6800XT is not faster than 6800 so is a bit of a waste of money. Considering the state of the market, the 6800 is currently the best buy for Resolve that is instantly available IMHO.

I already know that the card is great at TNR .. i can see realtime grades with 3 frame selected ... but having issues with footage while editing is hurting ... I will not sit to transcode 4K files each time ...

I'm also a gamer .. where the 6800XT shines... but when i do my video projects either for YT or editing events / clips that's where the card hurts with Resolve.

I do have high hopes that either the BMD staff or AMD driver team might eventually fix these 2 issues of mine.

The problem for me now is if i should keep the 6800xt and hope that they will fix it or buy a 30xx, man thats hard..

Don't count on fixes of this type because it involves too much back-and-forth between AMD and BMD (now this is an interesting play on acronyms  ) if it was easy to solve it would have been solved already. If you can sell it and get an RTX 3080 (same price slot)...

They simply could not beat Nvidia at gaming with brute force so they had to tweak the GPU design exclusively for gaming...

It has nothing to do with gaming .. and they are actually neck in neck there ...

And i'm not for "let it go" type of approach .. with fully working functionality i don't know how many of you guys here would buy an 8/10 GB VRAM card over a 16GB one!

I'm no fan of either company both have ups and downs, the thing is Davinci Resolve seems to be one of those software which can't play nice with AMD cards and that's mostly on Windows since on Mac it looks to work fine.

Was wondering if anyone is using the 6800 cards with an iMac? Looking at adding a eGPU to my 2019 iMac i9.
