Davinci Resolve + black preview screen using transform tools

PostThu Jan 28, 2021 7:37 pm

Hi there,

I know I need to provide machine related details to get the best help. Can you let me know how to easily access all the info necessary to help diagnose my potential issue?

Main issue that I notice (16.2.8) is when I attempt to use any of the crop or dynamic zoom related tools in either the Cut tab or the Edit tab. The image goes completely black, but it does come back when hitting play, but as soon as you stop it, then it goes back to black. I can see the Green and Red boxes over the black screen in dynamic zoom for example, and I can see the outside white box when I select crop from the slidebar tools on the Cut tab.

Does anyone know how to help me?

Thanks in advance and apologies for not including everything upfront.

I'd just like to add that I had been using this same version of Davinci on a different laptop computer for awhile with no issues, besides being too slow. So I bought this refurbished HP EliteDesk with 32gb RAM and thought everything else would be fine.

It would be great to know if anyone has any ideas. This is a fresh computer and I'm reluctant to stumble around on my own trying to figure out something I have zero knowledge about.

Is there additional information that I can provide?

What model GPU? What driver version?

So...I've now also noticed the black viewer or preview window issue goes away ONLY IF I go to the edit tab, then select "show timecode overlays" from the top right 3 dot drop down.

Could there be some setting that I am overlooking? Anyone have any ideas? This is rather irritating to say the least so any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

OK.

So my first thought is you should install an nVidia GPU here. I favor the new 3000 series, but man!...they're hard to find.

I'm hoping to not throw money at the issue and cross my fingers, as this is pretty *much why I'm here in the first place

not that I don't appreciate the advice/reply, I really do - for me it would be one thing if there were more noticeable and major issues - to then blame the hardware immediately. But when everything else seems to operate flawlessly, except for this tiny little weird annoyance, it makes me wonder if it is possibly something that may have an easier fix.

IDK, I'm no expert, that is for sure. But would really love to try a few settings related adjustments or driver/BIOS related updates that maybe I'm in need of here?

Thanks to anyone that can help!

There is no 16.8.2, so I assume you mean 16.2.8.

It may be helpful if you send the info below. But be aware that Intel HD4600 graphics are not supported in Resolve 17. So if you ever plan on going past 16.2.8 (or 16.3b3) you'll need a different computer.

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Yes, that worked.

So, with 16.3b3 on my HD4600 system (that's what your logs show your are using), I see the same. Just a limitation of the GPU and it's limited VRAM.

When I said you'd need to get a new PC, I assumed you had a laptop. But your SFF HP can actually hold a low profile graphics card. You might look into that as a solution.

I went back to 16.2.6 to see if it behaves the same, and it does.

I appreciate you taking a look for me - are there any lower cost graphics cards that would be worth installing? Something possibly under $100 or not much over?

I'm thinking 8GB VRAM as a minimum, so...you're looking at $600+.

The low profile GT1030 is a bit over $100. It only has 2GB of VRAM, which is only going to be adequate for HD workflows, and even then, no VRAM heavy GPU grading operations.

But, it will work better than the HD4600. So if you are looking for a short term solution for that PC, and HD is all you plan to do, the GT1030 could be an option.

Low profile cards with more VRAM, like a GTX 1050Ti with 4GB of VRAM, appear harder to find and are much more expensive than standard GTX 1050Ti cards. But even 4GB is ot great for higher than HD grading.

Sounds like you wouldn't go for anything under the GT1030 - so at least I know my floor (even if not great)

Also sounds like spending 4-5x as much on a better card will still not be that much better than the above as long as I stick with 1080p or lower with my projects? I really cannot justify spending another $500+ on a graphics card

Just irritating since (besides being slow...freezing, etc) things seemed to work just fine on my less powerful laptop = Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series w/ Intel CORE i3

GT1030 is wonderful for what it is, Resolve works nice with it in HD but not nearly as fast as more expensive cards if you star stacking effects. Also beware(!) it does not support hardware ENCODE (NVENC) like higher tier NVidia GPUs do, only DECODE. That's if you use the Studio version of Resolve. Perhaps you should also look into AMD's RX 550 or RX 560. They should all still be available new.

I ordered a gt1030 low profile - looks like an easy install in this desktop. This shouldn't require any additional power supply, right?

successfully installed the geforce gt1030 and issue resolved - thank you!!!

Last question while I have your attention, is CUDA or OpenCL better for my setup? Seems CUDA but I'm clueless so....yeah, thanks again!
