Missing Waveforms

Hi guys,

I'm working with mxf footage in studio 17 and for some reason a lot of waveforms arent showing in the timelines.

I do have waveforms turned on of course, but some show and others do not.

Has anyone else run into this and figured out how to fix it?

Haven't seen this myself.

What camera was used? What's your storage setup?

It's all shot on FS5s.

Media is stored on a 10g NAS feeding into the edit suites.

I should point out also, this is happening on multiple machines.

Disk or PostgreSQL database?

I've seen waveforms sometimes appear and sometimes disappear for MP3's.

Yes, I will try the same media on a local project shortly.

Still happens on a local project with the same media.

I had this mystery occur quite a lot, especially moving projects around.
I found it was based around incorrect media/cache paths or corrupt waveforms.

Try regenerating waveforms:
Close Resolve

Cache files for waveforms located in your Resolve Cache Folder (where ever that may be on your systems)
../CacheClip/audio/Users etc etc...

look for .wav.pfl files, delete them... (or delete the complete audio folder then re open

Seems to have solved all my waveform issues.

Just gave that a shot too and still no dice.

It's loading waveforms for the .wav music files but none of the .mxf media is generating waves at all...

Hmmm...
Try a new project...
Go through Prefs and Proj Settings and set all possible paths to a new test folder...
Then import a couple of files .mxf, music, etc and see if all waveforms appear.
In the meantime, I will test some .mxf files

Tried .mxf files and all works perfectly on my system.
The only way I could not get any waveforms on my timeline is by 2 methods.

If you have cached audio effects selected on a clip there is a bug which makes the waveform disappear after it has rendered the effects.
Been around in V16 in its early versions.

The other way is if clip attributes audio is not set correctly for the clip.

OK i've setup a new project.

It's a local project. cache has been set to a new location, loaded a bunch of different media into a project and it's all generating waves correctly....

Now i'm bloody confused

OK tried something out of curiosity and it's given me a lead.

I reimported one of the clips from the camera and there are 4 mono tracks, 2 have wave and 2 do not. This is correct.

I went and inspected the original imported media (same camera, same clips)
and it's got 16 mono tracks according to the clip attributes - this is incorrect.

I guess i've got a lead now... just gotta bash out some changes for a client then I can chase that rabbit down the hole.

Sound like you're onto it.
Either clip attributes or incorrect file path.
There's always more than one way to skin a rabbit :D

Chased it down to the way I was importing media.

These particular clips went through pluralize to create a synced xml that I brought in to resolve.

It seems that somewhere in that process pluralize screwed up the audio track information on the clips so as a result of them being imported through XML instead of directly they come in with incorrect audio track information.

If only resolve could sync video to video based on audio....

Are you saying that your pluralize process affected clip audio attributes?

This has always been possible with Multicam.

In 17, you can now do it in regular timelines.

Go to Help>Reference Manual>P. 65

yeah looks like it did, ran the same XML into premiere and it screwed it up there as well. Even though it's linking back to the same source media, it's changed the audio track assignments.

One clip per track....

So i have to load my media in, roughly align it and then go clip to clip auto syncing it all the way down the timeline, instead of selecting all of it and telling it to sync the lot?!

If you have an entire days worth of footage from multiple cameras I don't see how that's a time saving solution?
