Help importing GoPro Hero 5 Black files

PostFri Jan 29, 2021 4:51 pm

Hi All, I'm Pete and new to the forum.
Just downloaded the free version of Davince Resole 17 and am struggling to download my Go Pro files for editing. I've tried using the VLC file converter as suggested by somebody but cant seem to get anything working. Any help anyone could give to get me started would be gratefully appreciated.
Kind Regards, Pete.

As an aside, you copy the media from the card to the hard drive, you import the media into Resolve, you upload the final video to YouTube.

What exactly is the problem you're having? What's not working?

Hi, thanks for looking.
I am trying to import files shot on Go Pro Hero 5 Black. They wont import with the format the Go Pro uses. I've looked at vids on youtube and it's suggested to use a file converter so they can be used in Davinci Resolve. Downloaded a couple of converters and have had no luck with them. I thought it would be a simple drag and drop but it's not. Please excuse my ignorance on this subject but I haven't a clue how to convert the files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards, Pete.

Try this, the software is free:

Likely you'll need the Studio version to work with those original files.

Take a look at this thread. It turns out that another tread said GoPro Hero 6 files were having the same issues as the Yi files discussed here.

Re-wrapping the files solved the issues.

Re-wrapping is faster and has no quality loss, try that first. Shutter Encoder can do that too.

Cant figure out whats going on here at all. The above is what I get each time I import a file/clip. I've tried converting/re wrapping but cant get this to work. Probably something simple but I just dont know.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

did you try v16 instead of the beta ?

From other posts it seems the h264 support in the free version is currently not working on windows.

Never thought of doing that. I'll give it a go and see what happens. It's doing my nut in trying to get this to work, especially when all the vids on youtube show resolve 17 working with go pro files no problem...hey ho , I'll have a go...Thanks for the heads up..

That is because they are probably using the Studio paid version rather than the free version.

Can you confirm your Graphics Card... And whether you're using OpenCL?

I got the free version to see if it would work ok with the intention of buying the full version( for my Grandson) if it did. I understand there are limitations with free stuff, but I thought it would work with Go Pro Files. As I have no guarantee it will work for me, I'm going to give it a miss and look for something else.
Appreciate your input....

Forgot to mention, I,ve tried Resolve 16 as well and get the same results.

The version does not matter it is an issue of needed GPU decode that is available in the Studio version.

The issue is not decoding of the codec. Not sure why the user is being sent down that rabbit hole.

It's 8 bit 4:2:0 H.264 which IS supported in the free version, but not GPU accelerated like it is in Studio.

Then very dependent on the PC's CPU for performance. Not so for the Studio which is more dependent on GPU.

HI guys, firstly, thanks for the continued efforts in helping my problem.
As you can probably tell, I am no computer boffin. I'm trying to do this using a Lonovo Ideapad 320,
AMD Radeon 530 graphics card and 7th Gen AMD Fx 9800APU.

I have all my photos and things on an external hard drive so there isnt a great deal on the laptop

I'm getting the feeling that what I am using ,is not up to the job ?

Your specs probably just barely scrape by (if even at all). You could make things run smoother by creating proxies or caching your footage.

But the key pointer here is you have an AMD graphics card which uses OpenCL.

What you're experiencing are OpenCL issues that others are having as well...
