Reversed Clip - Cannot Add Transition?

PostSat Jan 30, 2021 1:38 pm

I have a drone shot of a home in the timeline that I reversed followed by the main entrance of the home.

Reason I reverse the shot is I want to make the drone shot backing over the roofline of the home and stopping in front of the home. It is easier to do this flying forward-up-and-over and then reversing it in post. Problem I am having is that for some reason I cannot add a ZOOM transition at the end of the clip to the beginning of the following clip which is in the home. I am assuming it has something to do with the fact I reversed the clip?

The Reverse shouldn't be a problem.

Make sure you have sufficient handles for both clips.

Nope, still wont work. I managed to expand the handles between both clips, will fade but I still cannot apply any transition. Tried to drag and drop but will not apply?

I changed the direction of the drone clip by using the "Speed Change" section of the Inspector.

Try Right Click>Speed Change>Reverse Clip.

Nope, that didn't work either Jim.

I think it has to do with reversing the clip. I guess Resolve does not see it as an ending but rather a beginning? I think Premiere Pro had the same issue?

I can add a transition to a reversed clip, no problem, so that's not it.

Maybe post a screen garb, so we can see?

Ok, I got it to work. I had to decrease the length of the end, or even the beginning of the next clip, in order for me to be able to drag and drop the transition in place. I wonder why that is? Had same issues in Premiere Pro? All works now. Thanks Jim. Still don't know why that is? Either a bug or by design and I am doing something wrong?

That is how Transitions work in Resolve, that is what Jim meant by making sure you had sufficient handles on either side of the transition.

I had an idea that was what Jim meant, still don't understand why it works that way?
Shouldn't a transition always work between 2 clip irregardless of the length of each clip?

So next time I drop in a transition and it doesn't "take" i should decrease the ending of the first clip or the beginning of the second clip? Still learning but I love it!

OK, I have to be a little insulting now.

This is why you need training in film/video production before you try doing the job.

It works that way because for a transition to work the clips need to overlap, so by trimming the clips and butting them up against each other you are creating that overlapped area. It would be a good idea to go over all of the training materials available on Blackmagic Designs website like Jim said, it is a great resource.
