MP4 Convert on M1 OS 11.1 DaVinci Resolve 17 Beta

PostTue Feb 02, 2021 12:59 pm

Hi good folks,

Sorry if this has been asked. I've tried searching but haven't found the answer.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro M1 running OS 11.1. I am new to DaVinci Resolve 17.0 and a 20+ year user of FCP products.

I am trying to import some MP4 files sent by a cinematographer. The computer doesn't seem to be able to open them in Quicktime, Resolve only reads one file as audio, and I don't seem to be able to download MPEG Streamclip on this machine in order to convert them.

Has anyone used a media converter app on an M1 machine? Can you suggest the app and suggest what would be the best format to convert to? Or is there something else I should be doing here?

I just realised I could convert the files in an ancient computer but that seems like a bad idea.

Also, should I upgrade to 17.1?

Thanks for your help kindness!

You should need no conversion at all, but you'll need 17.1 for the M1 machine. I can read mp4 out of all serious cameras (other than smartphones) just fine.

For converters, try Shutter Encoder. MPEGStreamclip was a Swiss Army knife in its time, but those days are long gone.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Hi Uli,

Thank you so much for your help. That's great news that you can open mp4s. Is that with the free version?

I'm having trouble finding 17.1. I think I was asked if I wanted to upgrade before and I clicked it away. When I check for updates it says there's Beta 08. I'm downloading that now, maybe I can get to 17.1 from there?

Any ideas on how to find 17.1? It seems hidden. Thanks!

I did find the download to 17.1 but it still isn't importing these mp4 files.

Now I'm making comments on my own comments.

I imported the mp4 files into iMovie and exported them - those files are working in Resolve 17.1. The original mp4 files were not. I wonder if it was because of the frame rate. Anyway, it looks like I've figured this out.

Post one of those files to check.
