Looking for advice to start - best hardware?

PostTue Feb 02, 2021 6:12 pm

I am looking to set up a PC to run DaVinci Resolve for video editing.
I already have experience in various other NLEs, but would like to move to this instead.
I want to build a new PC, as my old one is about to quit.
What hardware would be minimum requirements that would be compatible with Resolve?
Specifically to run OS as Linux (don't mind which distro). I currently run Ubuntu Studio 20.04 (have been using Linux in 1990s, as well as Windows).
I think at least 32 GB RAM, 8 GB RAM on graphics card, AMD CPU with at least 24 cores. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I searched this forum but could not find any specific answers.
From what I have read, I would assume graphics card should be Nvidia based?

Recently, it seems that Nvidia GPUs are the better choice, even if the CPU is from AMD. They are notorious for their "memory full" messages, though, so for UHD 8 GB VRAM might not be enough.

That said, it all depends which video sources are in your near future. Depending on the codec, you'll need to get the right card for hardware support in decoding and encoding. That applies to the Studio version (on MacOS, free version too).

For Fusion, 32 GB RAM are the lower limit (except for Apple's M1 machines).

All the good GPUs are bought by miners these days, really hard to find…
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Studio 19.1.3
MacOS 13.7.4, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580 + eGPU
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, MacOS 14.7.2
SE, USM G3
