H.264 Encoder Quality

PostTue Feb 02, 2021 9:11 pm

Hello,
I noticed that when I export a h264 file from davinci the quality is much worse (banding, compression) than when I export it from premiere with the same bitrate. i always need to export a dnxhd or sth and then export a h264 from premiere which is annoying.

Is there any chance you will be improving the encoding to be on par with premiere?

There are currently better exporters in the works for 17.
Until then, use your exports in DNxHD/HR and encode them with x264 in Handbrake. No need for Adobe.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Assuming you have the studio version .... export plugins are not supported in the free version AFAIK.

Use these settings, adjusting Resolution, Frame rate and Key Frames accordingly.

So its almost my base settings besides the keyframe thing, don't think this will have any impact at all. The solution is not in tweaking the settings here, its more the davinci encoder is poor. Just compare the same video export with resolve and premiere and youll see what I mean. The h264 output of premiere is far superior. But I hope theyll improve that soon as mentioned above.

It'll probably not be them who are going to improve encoding options. Version 17 is opening up this possibility to third-party developers.

Ah! Now i understand. I think this really should be done by BM themselves cause this is too important. But still good that this option will exist and be open for third parties .

Is 'Native' the only option you have under the encoder dropdown? I use an Nvidia graphics card and find I get better results using the Nvidea encoder. It is also faster, but I am guessing that may be dependant on the processing power of your graphics card.

Handbrake is using x.264 and it's excellent. I'm hoping for someone to integrate that encoder.
