Very high cpu usage on mac

I use Davinci Studio 17b8 on Macbook pro 16, 32GB RAM, Big Sur 11.2, and it consumes an awful lot of cpu.
Even if I open a project doing nothing, it consumes 900% cpu.

You probably have something (Color, Fusion) that needs to be rendered, and when you do nothing, it starts rendering. If you change that item, it needs to be rerendered. At least that's what I've found.

So if you have a long clip that has a red line above the timeline, this is normal behavior. Some effects are intensive but don't need rendering, but I also suspect that there are some that don't get a red line that still want to render (mainly Fusion, but maybe intensive Color work, too). So the red line might not always show the clip in question. There are several "cache" and "render" settings for Fusion, Color, etc, scattered throughout various menus and preferences.

Video has already been rendered and exported. I was using 17b7, now with 17b8, cpu is really huge. Never seen anything like that before. Even compiling code.

I am about to start a new project and so am sticking with 17b7 for the next few days, haven't load 17b8 yet.

OK, uploading the project and switched fo v17b8, and opened the project I just finished. Played the timeline a bit and then just sitting there Resolve uses about 20% CPU and a few % GPU. So about the same as prior releases. I haven't cycled through all tabs or tried modifying anything yet, though.
