Cannot launch Davinci Resolve 17 Beta 8 on Macbook Air

PostThu Feb 04, 2021 2:44 am

I know, I know, I screwed up, but....

I failed to backup my database when going from DaVinci 16....shame on me. When I went to upgrade to 17, it went to upgrade my database, which wasn't that large (12 projects or so), but after 2 hours, I force-quit the install. Naturally 16 was gone, and I couldn't complete the install on 17. But I could "uninstall," and that's what I did.

Eventually I was able to reinstall 16, and it works, though my old database is gone. (Yes, you did warn me about backing up, but I didn't see it.)

And I was able to reinstall 17 to another folder, but it won't run, stalling at one of the startup screens.

I am running:
Macbook Air, 1.7 Ghz, I7, 8GB 1600 Mhz

Is there any way to get 17 to run?

You write beta 8 in the title? Are you trying the Intel version (17.0)?

Ah, I see, it's an Intel MB Air. Did it work before? It's very limited for DR.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

It's a Macbook Air 13-inch, mid 2013, 1.7 Ghz Intel Core i7 (screen shot attached). I actually had done the uninstall of all and a reboot I had before reinstalling 17. What's a Power Restart? Is that different than just choosing restart?

Oh, it worked beautifully before with v16. There are some new ease-of-use features I was looking for that I see they incorporated into v17, particularly since I'm hoping to use it with multicam and I've not found yet a way in 16 to easily handle a conversion of my timelines to multicam after syncing. That seems pretty simple to do in v17.

Requirements of DaVinci Resolve 17 increase compared to DR 16. It's possible that your 8GB (Intel) MacBook Air is just insufficient in the requirements.

As for the rest of this post, sorry to be that guy recommending an upgrade.

Many of the videos illustrating the power of editing 4K with DaVinci Resolve 17 is actually the 17.1 beta on the new M1 Apple Silicon MacBook Airs. I have one and very much recommend it.

You may want to consider the trade in value with Apple if considering an upgrade. If you order from Apple, I do recommend the extra $200 for the 16GB edition. The memory is built into the M1 SoC (system on a chip) and is not upgradeable. DR 17.1 works well on the M1 with 8GB, but the 16GB will help prevent the swapping to the SSD drive as frequently, yielding better performance on the rendering portion of the application.

I did not try beta7, but I had tried Beta 4 at one point. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'll look for 7 and try that.

I suspected that an upgrade might be needed. I'm not ready yet for that. I had been hoping that my machine was somewhat up to the task based on the specs. Thanks for the review of the new M1. I'll plan on getting there someday soon, I hope.
