Resolve rebooting my computer pretty often

PostThu Feb 04, 2021 10:04 am

Hi all!

i've tried searching for a similar topic but didn't seem to find anything similar.

I am having this issue that makes it pretty hard to work on resolve in my machine.

Before it used to happen just while rendering, but now seems to also happen while editing. It just reboots my machine. While working on a project, or while rendering. Before it seem to happen less often if I would drop the render speed to maybe 25 or 50fps, but now it also happens while just editing.

Not sure what to try. I did a clean install on windows, also happened before it.

I upgraded to resolve 17 beta but was happening also on 16.

I have a win10 machine with:
Intel i9 7960x 32 core
128gb ram
radeon rx580

Any suggestion or help will be deeply appreciated

thanks!!

No software should be able to just reboot your machine, no matter how bad it screws up.

Did you try some stress-test on the system ?

Something like running FurMark and Cinebench in parallel to stress test the GPU and CPU simultaneously.
If it can do that for like 30 min, that would at least exclude any hardware or thermal issues.

Thanks for your reply! Will try that, but I am pretty confident it is resolve in some way.

My "professional" work is film composer, so I put the machine under big stress often, even though it is true it's more about cpu than gpu for me, usually. Never had an issue.

The moment I open resolve and start messing around it reboots the machine at some point.

But will try that, thanks!

Windows 10 is pretty damn stable. Crashing so hard it reboots is most often a symptom of a bad driver or failing hardware. Most likely Resolve is just triggering that failure, not causing it.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Check that the GPU does not overheat. Have had similar problems once when my computers air intakes was clogged. Also check internally that the GPU is not full of dust. Did not use Resolve then, but when my GPU got to hot my computer just stopped or turned off.

And also check the windows event viewer. Should be something there if there was logged an error when this happens.

Hi again!

So it seems like you guys were right. furmark and cinebench running at the same time cause the machine to reboot.

The gpu tops at around 74, 75º C so it seems not to be a thermal issue. AMD rx580 here.

I upgraded drivers, and still the same.

Couldn't find any info on the event viewer, but while looking for similar issue, people seem to agree it's common to be a power supply problem.

I have a pretty nice EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G3, 80 Plus Gold 850W.

Before trying to find another one...any advice on other things I could try?

Thanks very much, the forum was really useful!!

PSU would have been my guess that's usually what trips when problems occurs only when both CPU and GPU are stressed, but that EVGA one should definitely handle it.

I assume you also checked CPU die temps and they are OK ?

Do you have any XMP profile loaded for your memory ? It might be that it's marginal and the increase ripple caused by high load on the GPU is making it error-out. You could try to lower that.
It's a bit of a long-shot, but it's free to test so ...

Check your RAM, using MemTest86 for example. Disable any overclocking of the CPU, GPU and RAM if you have them. Use default config for your motherboard. If it is stable, then work backwards. Revert each one at a time.

I have exact same problem, my computer just shuts down (completely) and reboots.
This happens only in davinci resolve, sometime while Im doing some "heavy" work and sometime just text tool crash the whole computer.
Im also After effects user, I work with some very heavy AE templates and my pc never crashes this is strange and very frustrating, the great thing is I never loose any work, Resolve live save is great!

Hi again!

So, yes, the power supply was the problem, changed it and it is working fine now, wow!

@smunaut try whta they suggested, wunning furmark and cinebench at the same time, that's what triggered the reboot for me.

THanks all!!

just an old antec 650W, but I guess I'll get something better. This at least works fine, so I guess anything should work.

Oh ok, so it's not that 850W was not enough, it's that the PSU was actually failing.

For bad experience, every time the check list is
- power supply (quality and power, too often the Watt are not continued but the maximum temp peak of power)
- ram (last week I add newer 64gb of ran to my computer, start problems, ram check and ones of bank had defect)
- temperature of cpu/gpu (too often people not see how warm air stay near gpu, think only to bad design of all you that push warm air down instead to remove from gpu, warm air go ever up for thermodynamic rules).

Last chance are software, full reboot of win10 or OS X from software is rare on working machine.
Resolve is ones of few software that use a lot cpu gpu power, I do also 3d rendering and only few 3d engine stress my computer like resolve.
