Mac mini M1 or Windows GTX2070?

PostThu Feb 04, 2021 7:59 pm

Hi,

I have a Windows 10, Intel i7, 16gb with Nvidia GTX2070 and I am getting a Mac mini M1 8Gb for (mostly) development. Question is, which one of the 2 machines will perform better with Resolve 17?

Thanks,
Alex

The mini may perform better with formats like H.264/265, 10 bit in particular.
But any heavy processing, like temporal NR, neural filters etc. will be faster with the 2070.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Depends on your workflow .. if you need to just edit and simple color grades the M1 is amazing... if you need to do more complex color grading the RTX 2070 will obliterate the M1.

I have a MBA M1 16GB and an 5800X + 6800XT 32GB ... on a 4K 3m 46s music clip with NR the Windows machine rendered in 5 minutes while the M1 rendered in 1 hour. When i removed the NR the Windows Machine rendered in 2 minutes while the M1 took around 15 minutes.

It's good for light works but not that great when you throw many nodes at it.

Footage used was Sony A7III 4K 25fps.

Exactly. I wouldn't suggest one of the current M1 models as your only machine, but it would be great on the road, if you have a capable desktop sitting at home.
