Timeline View options

I have been having trouble viewing the timeline options on any version newer than 16.2. I went back to 16.1 and I see them, installed version 17 and am having the same problem. I can see the the waveform and thumbnails in the cut page but when I which over to the edit page I can not see the thumbnails or waveform.
I am on a Mac using 11.2 Big Sur OS.
Please help.
