How to fix slow boot time of DVR (looking for control panel)

Hi Guys, there has been many forum posts with different answers all over the place.

I thought I'd make a post that is easy to find and have an in-depth look at how I solved this issue, in the hopes that it will help you also solve it.

I know it's a bit long-winded at times, but I feel I have to give you my hardware configuration so we can find if the number of drives affects things for example. If you want to skip it and just see the main points on how I fixed it please scroll to the bottom for the summary i'm writing this as I go along.

First ever boot was around 2 mins off the top of my head.
I had 1 nvme, 1 ssd, 5 hdd, system was a R7 2700X with 32gb of memory and an old 2gb gpu (AMD 6950 I think - it's about 10 years old). I was mainly editing in 1080p and this worked fine with adobe as it was more cpu based and I was making short videos. I then started to do more professional videos and started to invest in my gear, Bought an external raid enclosure, external drives for backups etc.

Still on a budget I got the amd 5500xt 8gb card which solidified DVR as my main NLE. (I found out later Resolve does not like this card, but it still works for most cases so far, but very slow in some things like magic masks (my next quest to speed up - any advices welcome).

I also upgraded to the Ryzen 3900x added another nvme as a "working or media drive" and use my SSD as the scratch drive. I have 5 other HDDS there that are used for my personal storage. I did clone my nvme to the new one and used my boot drive on the pcie link and my media drive is connected to the m.2 that is directly connected to the cpu. My ssd is connected via Sata cable as are my HDDs.

At this point Resolve would take around 30 mins to boot up which started to get on my nerves, especially with the fact that if my computer went to sleep I would have to reset DVR as I would get a no audio device found error.

I was about to format my machine (as I cloned it from one drive to another and thought that might have been the issue) but thought let me have one last go at this as i've seen other people have the same issue too.

My findings so far and what I did to reduce the boot up times...

I uninstalled all blackmagic programs.

I ran CCcleaner.

Reinstalled Resolve from scratch.

THIS MADE MY BOOT TIME AROUND 15 MINS so far so good, knocked 15 mins off.

I thought maybe as I have lots of drives (8 inside my PC - 2nvme, 1 ssd and 5 spinners) as well as a 5 disk usb enclosue, not to mention a handful of external drives. But then I thought it can't be (not tested at this point).

So I searched through this forum and other forums and found that if I removed my USB hub - A Sabrrent 4 port hub (not sure if brand makes a difference) and I also disconnected my 5 drive bay and SD card reader.

I also checked my firewall settings and nothing was blocked.

THIS BROUGHT MY BOOT TIME TO 5 MINS 55 SECONDS.

So far i'm super happy with that as I can hit boot and then go get the kettle on for a cuppa.

I then read somewhere here by Albert Hofmann that we can make this even faster by removing defines network folders. So...

Check under Preferences / System / Media Storage if you have network folders defined, which are not accessible.

I couldn't find this but i'm guessing it may have been renamed for DVR 17 and now says "Automatically display attached local and network storage locations"

Let's try that.

I unchecked that and also noticed that I had removed the check mark next to my scratch disk (maybe from a previous effort to speed up boot times, so I re-checked that on).

I couldn't believe my eyes, I almost cried. I've been suffering since DVR 16b with this issue. Maybe I didn't need to upgrade my machine so much.

BOOT UP TIME 19 seconds

I tested it several times and came to an average of 18 seconds.

OK so now I will start to replug in everything.

BOOT UP TIME 18 seconds

Raid drive plugged in and turned on

BOOT UP TIME 19 seconds

SD card plugged in

BOOT UP TIME 17 seconds

So there we have it, the number of drives may affect it (I will do more tests later), but if you uncheck "automatically displayed attached local and network storage locations" it will speed up your boot times.

I'm so happy with this now.

I've set everything back to how it was originally, with all drives and devices connected and still have an average boot-up time of around 18 seconds.

I hope this helps you guys from having to scroll through lots of posts to find the answer.

SUMMARY

So to sum everything up even though it says looking for control panel, that is just the message on the screen and not the reason why you get the long boot times.

You need to uncheck "automatically displayed attached local and network storage locations" in preferences/system/media.

I'm interested what spec you are running? Also are you using 17.2?
