Can't replace or add media

PostTue Feb 09, 2021 12:10 am

M1 Mac mini with 16gb ram using DaVinci Resolve 17.1B Build 13.

New to DaVinci Resolve after 20 years editing on a PC. 4k was stuttering so started playing with DaVinci Resolve about 2 months ago on a PC. Rave reviews convinced me to go over to the Dark Side and get the new Mac mini M1. Much more responsive interaction with video, but holy crap, lots of bugs in this software seems like.

I had a DaVinci project on the latest PC beta. 4 days ago got the M1 Mini so imported the PC project only to find out that the Mac version of DaVinci doesn't appear to support Cineform. Only solution I could figure out was to start from scratch.

Well I accidentally left one of the Cineform clips on the timeline yet somehow the clip played like the mp4 h.265 clips. Then I started getting the "Media Offline" error so many have mentioned. Relinking works temporarily in the edit panel, but trying to do any work in fusion brings the error immediately back again. After several hours of trying to search for solutions, I figured I would just bring in the original .265 mp4 clip, then add it to a track above the Cineform clip to match the timing, and then delete the Cineform clip. But when I try to drag the clip or import it into the media panel, it will not go in. Nothing happens. Using the menu to import the clip does nothing as well.

Having to turn off other video layers in order to edit a fusion layer (otherwise the node data doesn't appear in Fusion) is only a real problem in the loss of so many hours trying to figure out why the Fusion data disappeared. But when I can't even just drag and drop new media into the program, seems pretty tough to figure out a work-around for that.

Two weeks ago, when I was still on the PC, I was thinking about upgrading to the Studio version of DaVinci, but I saw lots of questions from users that went unanswered. Now with so many bugs, is it just my mistake to try to use the 17 beta supposedly made for the M1? Should I downgrade to some previous version? Are paid users pulling their hair out too?

Just wondering if all this potential is just not ready for real client work or if it Is just a lot of user error on my part. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Further trial and error revealed that dragging and dropping a 1 gb hvec clip works immediately, However, when dragging a 3 gb clip, I must wait until the green little "+" sign disappears and then release the mouse button, and the clip will be added to the media pool.

Also I had to manually replace the Cineform clip by adding the hvec clip above it in the timeline and then adjust the timing, add the cuts, and copy the attributes, as I could not get "replace selected clip" to work.

As I understand it, I am dealing with some issues with Mac vs PC as I guess a Mac can't read Cineform format... I may be wrestling with some bugs as an early adopter of the M1 mini as well as Resolve beta software for it... and probably lots of user error on my part with a lack of experience with Resolve in general.

Seems like I have a bowl of macaroni and cheese with chocolate chips and prunes - each on their own is manageable and potentially entertaining, but mixed together makes for one hell of a weird meal.

And yet I don't get up from the table.
