I find the nomenclature around Multicam timelines ambiguous. It seems there are 2 ways to see the timeline of a Multicam . One is with all the cameras all broken out an d arranged vertically on different video levels. This is what you get when you first make the Multicam and its icon has those 4 little squares . Then other is made when you select that Multicam with all the video levels, and choose "Create New Timeline with Selected Clips" . This one is what you edit, shows only only 1 video level, and appears in the Media Browser like any other timeline.

Are there separate names for these 2 views?. As far as i can see these are both called multiCam Timelines which I find pretty confusing. Actually I've taken to calling the Editing version a "MultiClip" timeline but I think i just made that up for myself,

Multicam is more of a clip than a timeline. Or maybe, more like a Compound Clip.

You add the Multicam clip to a timeline for editing.

Helps a little but its still confusing because I need to name that timeline something and Multicam is the logical word to use . So for example I make a multicam with 5 clips from a concert and Resolve calls it a Multicam - so i rename it - "Concert A Multicam". Then i put it in a Timeline to really do my editing . So what do I name that ? - "Timeline Concert A Multicam ". Its just awkward. I've made up my own nomenclature and am calling the timeline a "MultiClip" ("Concert A MultiClip" ) . Its not especially accurate , at least it keeps my head straight. I think Resolve ought to have a name for it.

Not a big deal just confusing for awhile.

My habit is to create a bin for Multicam clips and name them logically. Act I, Ceremony, etc.

Timelines also get logical names like Jones 2020 Recital, or Smith Wedding.

Editor's choice, really. There's any number of ways to organize things.

Generally, including words like "multicam" when you name multicam clips isn't very helpful. It's redundant; it doesn't tell you anything informative about the clip. The same goes for naming project files with the word "project," timelines with the word "timeline," etc. If you ever find that your naming conventions include the same word frequently, you should seriously consider the utility of that word.

*Having said that,* I do sometimes suffix multicam clips with _MCC to help them stand out a little in list view, which is *really* a bad habit because it doesn't tell anyone else anything about the clip. Organized bins and smart bins are a much better idea.

Non-descriptive nomenclature is a pretty big problem in Resolve, and with other NLE's, too, though. "Linking/re-linking," "offline/online," "proxy/timeline proxy," "show all frames/show individual frames," etc.

Plus:

Center Crop with no resizing == "Crop"
Scale full frame with crop == "Fill"
Scale entire image to fit == "Fit"

I like to be able to quickly see whether my timeline is a Multicam or not especially because i'm also using timelines for B roll. , but it is an obvious and good idea to use a Letter code rather than writing out "MultiClip" or MultiCam over and over - Duh. Thanks

Remember, Multicam is more of a (compound) clip. It's not a timeline (even though it can be opened in one).

I understand what you're saying Jim, but since that Multicam clip is pretty useless until its brought into a Timeline it still seems like a little clarifying language wouldn't hurt. No big deal though as i can make up my own.
