HDR and Cintel 2

PostTue Feb 09, 2021 2:38 pm

Hello,

I am comparing 2 16 mm film reels scanned with Cintel 2.
One scanned in SDR and the other scanned in HDR (2 passes)

I can't see any obvious differences between the 2 scans !

What's the trick to scan in HDR ?

Thanks

Are you monitoring the HDR in an HDR setup (project, monitor, etc.)?

if you have any advices about that ?

Not sure if 16mm is good enough for HDR output.
You need to ask people who dealt with film a lot.

The improvement is most obvious in the quality of the blacks in PRINT films as they get exploded the most, but on 16mm you'll probably find most PRINTs are pretty low quality and there is a lot of noise in the film itself.

In negative films, the improvement is observed in the highlights.

You can compare your results against those on the website showing cross section.

Ideally, we'd like to get Resolve exporting the 'over exposure' achieved (as it is a gain) because with some films it only achieves 1.6x more light depending on the density. The SDK could be used to identify this figure.

Ideally we'd like an enable in the clip to turn HDR on/off during playback so the change is obvious, but I'm not certain that's a priority for the Resolve team unless there is more pressure from the community.
