Feature length color correction workflow

PostThu Feb 11, 2021 7:36 pm

Hi all,

sorry if my question is too broad or basic, but I was wondering what is your preferred workflow when facing feature length work. I’m curious about mindset, procedures and specific resolve tools you can use to speed up your work.

I mainly resort to flaging 1-3 hero shots per scene-location, enjoying the ability to filter them in the lightbox to concentrate on total look creation or have a overview of the full project.

Once i got them approved, I work in a scene by scene basis, working from the hero shot towards the end, and from the hero backwards to the beginning, mainly with an already created node estructure divided in NR/ RAW—normalization—shot matching—-secondaries—-look creation—-grain and film emulation. Each of these “nodes” can be a node or a combination of nodes (parallels, comps...). I used to train with a renowed colorist who tried to use 1 or 2 at most, but I find it quite hard to reduce them.

I mainly try to keep a consistency / narrative between hero shots and mainly matching the rest of the scenes to the corresponding hero shot.

I’m still trying to find a clear use for groups but I’m curious to hear your workflow, hints and tricks, and maybe learn some tools I could be missing.

cheers,

Jose
